Is it time to remove anonymity online?

No, why would it be an email providers job to identify someone? That would be the social media sites responsibility. You don't need to give fake details for an email address, some providers like ProtonMail don't ask for any details.

I didn't know that. So you can set up an email address without providing personal details and send information around the world. Is that a Good thing?

we're slowly entering a heard society where everyone has to think and feel how someone else tells you to
The media is more free than it ever has been. You are actually a product of a generation that was taught to think how you do, through big tabloid media. Notice how most of those have gone bust now?

It's worse than ever in the last few years though.

media be like "snow storm on it's way" "heatwave coming" etc and people be like "lol yea right" whilst the media tries to whip up a frenzy.

then it does pandemic buying and covid, the media loves FEAR, they love a good war. it's how they get viewers, they milked the hell out of this pandemic.

the media are the ones too blame for those who feel covid was blown out or proportion, you could probably argue they are to blame for a lot of modern problems

you all know the media hype the danger or risk of anything 1000%, yet you all buy it during a "pandemic" as if it's gospel truth

the next generation will be a generation of people scared out of their wits everytime they get a common cold or it's flu season

Lots I agree with in there. But let's not forget the Cold War, several Petrol Crises' and so-on. This isn't a new thing. It is a lot harder to coordinate a centralised propaganda effort, unlike before where you just gave old Rupert a back hander.

Unfortunately it is social media that makes the propaganda hard to spot, as the demographics are targeted so specifically. As they say, it is easier to build on your strengths than your weaknesses, and creating several racist dogwhistles is one way to keep the right wingers head buried. Just look at mmj.

these platforms could just ban racist words from being used?

how hard is that?

Can't really ban the word monkey or the emoji. That was the main tweets sent to Marcus rashford I think.

The internet is worldwide so it's actually quite hard to legislate for.

It needs to come from the companies themselves. Maybe a new type of technology? Although what that would be I don't know.

Still can't quite believe how someone in this day and age would even think about posting something racist. I mean why would they? Personally, I think it's more attention seeking and immature humour than being an out and out racist. They know their tweets could end up on a news site or start trending for a few days. They want their 15 minutes of fame to feel important..... Even if they are anonymous.

Of course they could very well be racist through and through.

Very worrying.

I don't think anonymity is the problem.
I think simply some people shouldn't be able to contact people like marcus rashford. What twitter possibly ought to do is only allow a person with x amount of tweets to contact marcus rashford. That way you kind of filter out knuckleheads who only sign up to abuse someone online. But it's not an exact science, obviously going to get some who have tweeted a lot of their nonsense. Basically if people were in the flesh, people would be lucky to have 5 minutes of time with any celebrity.

Mental illness, off their heads on drugs, uneducated or a combination of all three. Then there are countries that have much bigger issues with racism. It's easy to see why some people would post racist stuff.

There's abuse all over Twitter, and not just to famous people and not just racist abuse. That won't change. When something is there to give 4.66 billion people a platform to give their opinions, or however many people have the internet now, there are always going to be nasty people in there that will give people abuse. This idea that we'll ever live in a world where things like this won't happen is unrealistic.

Not a good idea IMO - I've seen too many times when someone has said something completely innocent on a forum only for someone else to violently react to their opinion trying to dox them, making up stuff to try and get them fired from work and/or swatting, etc.

It sadly happens here all the time where posters completely change the words or meanings of what somebody actually says and then make others believe what you said because they aren't bothered to go back and read what you said either.

Absolutely, why wouldn't it be? You could also set up your own email and pay for the domain/hosting anonymously with crypto.

I don't think it's a good idea because it enables one to say what they like behind a cloak of anonymity, with no repercussions.

I'm all for free speech, I have the right to say what I like, but if I break the law I should face the consequences.

How can the left be arguing that voter ID is racist but at the same time be pushing for domestic COVID passports and ID as a requirement for using the internet? so we're going to fight racism with even more racism?

Us liberals basically are aiming for a mad Max dystopian battle. We call it the first gammoning

Exactly, people can quite easily track someone down using the info on those sites. You don't need much.

In the old days the internet was mostly geeks and smart people, now it's the masses. They have no idea about cyber security. For like 10 years it was trivial to hack Facebook accounts. But only a few months ago they had pretty much their entire database stolen again, that is still floating around and downloadable. Right now you can find anyone who is on Facebook if you know where to look, also their phone numbers, contacts/friends etc.

There was a guy the other day identified by his bed sheets.

Can't find the thread now - possibly deleted when it back fired. There was a couple of people on here who challenged people to identify them thinking they were anonymous and someone tracked one down completely and the other despite them being careful I managed to to link their online identities through tracking specific behaviours and while I couldn't identify exactly where they lived without doing some leg work narrowed down where they lived and found a load of other personal information identifying them which I didn't share for obvious reasons.

Even though to get a covid ID you also need to be a citizen lol. The far left is full of hypocrisy which is why its always a mess and full of in-fighting.

Anonymity allows people to speak up more, to be themselves. In most cases this is a good, in a few it is bad. It's one of the great things about the internet.

But I don't think anyone is truly anonymous online. Not unless you're behind seven proxies.

Yep, it smacks of yet another "drip" in the drip drip drip towards a thought police state.
