Is It Time To Upgrade Your Core i5 2500K?

Every 2500k I've seen will do 4.8Ghz standing on it's head. Strange they include the 6500 overclocked now Intel's killed overclocking.

i have a pair of 2500K and a pair of 6500 on the way. i feel a shootout coming. both my 2500K are good one does 5.1 on 1.4v and the other does 5.1ghz on 1.38v. these 6500 are going to have there work cut out

thats odd, I always heard that ram frequency makes very little different to performance, like less than 5%

Since Sandybridge (maybe before?) RAM speed has meant sweet nothing. I watched some direct comparisons between DDR3 and DDR4 and even dumping the speed down to half the chips rated speeds the performance outcome was negligible.

Nice video. 2500K is good enough for 60 FPS monitors, but gains can be had going to skylake. Also less stutter in many cases.

With a very powerful GPU (Titan X in this case) and low screen resolution (1080p) the memory bandwitdth makes a big difference. See this thread from a few months ago:

I don't trust digitalfoundry. Their results are always so wonky compared to everyone else's.

They analyse frametimes as well as fps. DF, techreport and pcper are miles ahead of other hardware sites when it comes to benchmarking hardware for gaming :)

I am on a Xeon E3 1230 V2/Core i7 3770 so I think I will be sticking with it until next year or until the motherboard goes. Probably more GPU limited with a GTX960 IMHO!!

Just bought an upgrade of a 5820k to replace mine, needed the extra cores and so on. Lasted me 4 and a half years. Could have done more but i'm recording and streaming more often now so needed the extra grunt.

I upgraded from a 2500k to a 2600k, purely because it was a £20 upgrade really. But even so, the 2500k has a lot of life in it yet, it's the new Q6600 IMO.

It's a pretty irrelevant question really. If someone has a 2500k and it does everything they need it to do then upgrading just for upgrading sake is just a pointless waste of money. It is still a cracking cpu.

I have two 2500k rigs. Often thought this year a new rig is needed. Any tips on overclocking as in all honesty i am a noob with it.

Got a pre water cooled cpu cooler. Is there any guides from you nice people can throw
at me ? Msi p67 board GD65.

As a cheeky overclock makes sense.

IMsi p67 board GD65.
If it's anything like my MSI (actually one of the ones which should have been RMAed, but I was lazy and don't use many SATA ports) you simply reach into the case and press the OC Genie button on the motherboard. Instant 4.2GHz and no problems... for me anyway.

everyone is different.for many who game light or dont do much multitasking it will be good for a while.

for other users there are big gains.

each person has different uses.

in two of my main games i play for eg which i record in the fps is big increase over my older 3570k. many even me thought it wouldnt be.moved to 5820k oc.

in theHunter for eg at 1440 everything max when recording my fps has nearly doubled ! thats a big deal.

dirt rally big difference in how it actually feels. so smooth now. while the fps isnt big increase in dirt rally the feeling when playing. odd stutters gone now absolutely silky smooth minimums better also.

To upgrade the 2500k you would have to go with a 6600k minimum and if you own a 2500K chances are it's overclocked.

Z170 motherboard £100
6600K £200
DDR4 £80~

If the 2500K can hit 4.8Ghz+ you have wasted the best part of £400. If the 2500k can't hit 4.8Ghz you have upgraded from one quad core to another for maybe 10% more performance just at the point when DX12 starts using 8 cores. It's a completely pointless upgrade.

Even if you had a stock 2500k or something like a i5 2400 with a P67 motherboard the upgrade is debatable. Digital foundries seem to be looking at the 6600k from the point of a drop in upgrade, when in the real world the cost is probably closer to £500.
