Is It Time To Upgrade Your Core i5 2500K?

bench marking i know it isnt real world but cinebench for eg my 5820k at 4.6 score twice the score of a 3770.

in games it is noticeable.bf4 i get nearly 20 fps difference from i5.thats a top end card difference.alone.
editing/ps no comparison.its2/3 times as quick.

you dont have to worry or be bothered if you happy but it is a big difference in many things.

Albeit a generation behind I am at the stage where I should really think about upgrading my i5-760. It has served me very well, getting on for 6 years old, but I am still probably more GPU limited (have a OC 7950) than CPU limited so I will probably bite the bullet at some point and build a completely new system, quite like the idea of downsizing to ITX and getting a R9 Nano.

If you were looking at building a new system (mine is sig) sometime this year, would you go Z170 and Skylake, or go X99 and Broadwell?, I believe there's more X99 boards out this year, and Broadwell is due this year also.

New system will in all likelyhood include one Polaris or Pascal top end card, and a 1440p monitor, and 16 GB of DDR.

No point in buying anything at the moment. New CPUs are out later in the year. Even if they turn out to be like Skylake and not worth it, it will still cause current CPU prices to drop.

I was thinking the occasional game changing pc game might come along but they will be few and far between, surely most games are going to have to work on ps4 and xbox one so will be limited ? hows the whole dx12 thing going to take off if all the profit is in console games still ?.

There is a follow up video to the one in the OP too:

My Xeon E3 1230 V2 is around the same as a Core i7 3770K in performance, and I am using 1600MHZ RAM too. I picked it up a few years ago for around £100 from the famous auction site.

Looking even at the Core i5 6600K performance compared to the Core i7 3770K with both using bog standard RAM and a Titan X,and only at 1920X1080,its an improvement but I still think there is life in the old dog, especially since I want to get a 2560X1440 monitor at some point, which will make things more GPU limited, especially if you have something slower than a Titan X.

The worst thing is that new the Xeon E3 1230 V2 could be had for around £175 from retailers.

Done a build or two with the Haswell Xeon E3 1230 V3 which was around the same price,so I am not certain if any of the newer sub £200 Intel CPUs are really any better especially if you don't overclock.

I'm so glad I upgraded from my 2600k to a 4790k.

My 2600k could only overclock to 4.3GHz, and it took a TON of volts to get it there (probably due to crappy MOBO, as my 3570k wouldn't clock well either).

My 4790k clocks at 4.7GHz @ low volts (I forget, maybe 1.22v?) and 4.9GHz is just about doable at silly volts, though I cant see the point.

I felt NO difference at all, but honestly it was worth it just so I dont have that nagging feeling in the back of my head that my setup sucks.
