Hi guys,

I've had my current rig for about 3 years now and am wondering if now it the time to upgrade to coffee lake?

I mostly use my PC for gaming and handbrake encoding/plex streaming 1080/4k to one tv.

The specs I'm currently running are:
i5 4690
16gb DDR3
EVGA 1070 Superclocked
512gb SSD

My budget is about £600-£650, so would I see noticeable gains to justify the cost going for something along the lines of:
i7 8700k (OC'd to around 4.8Ghz)
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
Asus Prime Z370-P
16gb Corsair Vengeance DDR-3000

The alternative is to keep saving and wait for the next generation of CPU on the 10nm architecture, but I'm looking for peoples opinions?

Honestly wait till next year, 8 core Intel and Zeb + (refresh) . If you can find a i7 4790k second hand and sell your i5 might buy you extra year or so and give some power were needed

I did think waiting might be the best bet, just starting to get the itch as I've ben running my 4690 for a few years now and wanted to get a processor I can OC.

Thanks for the advice!

I have the same 4690 CPU in my NAS PC with Plex, it runs very well and upgrading to the latest CPU wont add a huge difference... I'm also itching to upgrade something in my desktop, but all upgrades I look at are expensive and not worth the money for my requirements. Personally I will wait til next year to upgrade either of my PCs.

see what the second hand market is for the i7 version - since coffee lake is out and other might not of been able to resist :0

The i5 you have has still got life in it so hold on and save up for next year with the next round of intel and Amd zen refresh

Not really, no. The only component I'd suggest is getting the i7-4790. Only get the K model if your motherboard supports overclocking.
