Is it too late to buy a console?

Nope, wiiU will be the soonest, but thats still a while away.

Get whatever your friends in RL have so you can play with them. There isn't that much difference between the platforms these days

Wouldn't think so, if you want to treat yourself then get one..

*cough* PS3 *cough* lol

Right, anyhow do a search around and see the benefits of both as there isn't a lot in it when it comes to the games other then Ps3 has a few exclusives that'll never see the light on any other platform..

Most 360 games tend to always make it to the PC, and one thing worth noting.. Online gaming for 360 is around £30 - £40 a year whereas PS3 is free... so if you've not got a lot of friends with a 360 then a live sub might not make so much sense if you can get it free elsewhere...

~2+ years til next gen are released - long wait if you want to wait for next gen :p

I have both... barely touch the PS3.

The controller is un-naturally shaped - it causes your thumbs to ache after very short periods of play and is just generally more awkward to hold. Have no idea why they've persisted with this shape for so long :S

The Xbox controller feels much more natural and doesn't cause thumb cramp.

That alone is enough to swing it for me, personally - if I was choosing just one console.

The only benefits I can see of the PS3 over the Xbox360 are the integrated blu-ray player for people who don't have a standalone player & a very small number of exclusive titles (uncharted, god of war, gt5, little big planet and killzone 3 are the only games of any real interest to me).

For multi-platform games, the Xbox 360 version is usually noticeably better than the PS3 version. Look at Skyrim for a good example, a lot of people are stuggling to get much past level 30 due to a save issues that's still waiting to be fixed. Other non-specific issues like that are usually performance based, I'm not saying the X360 is perfect - but it suffers from these issues much less.

Wait until the WiiU arrives tbh. The other 2 are starting to show their age, and if history repeat's itself there a good chance you could end up with an expensive doorstop this time next year.....

This is spot on and mirrors almost EXACTLY what I would have said to you.

It covers all the major points and the pad truly is horrific (for most people) on PS3 compared to the Xbox.

I also have both machines and barely turn the PS3 on and every multi platform game is purchased for the 360.

The PS3 pad is truly horrific for most people? Really? I agree with some things said, But its blown wayout of proportion. Personally I prefer the MANY Ps3 exlusives. And the pad is better for certain games, Fighting games, hack and slash, Driving.

That said, the points about performance issues, fair enough.

To be honest, I dont see why comparisons are being made in this thread anyways, the question was about buying a console. not asking which is better

I'm talking from personal experience, read comments and verbal comments... most I've have heard from/spoken to think the Xbox 360 controller is better, more comfortable to use - especially for extended periods - it's just generally better designed IMO, unlike the PS3 with it's "afterthought" thumbsticks. They're at completely the wrong angle for natural use, with the d-pad being in prime location when the analogue stick is normally used. The pad should have been properly re-deigned when they chose to add analogue sticks.

I completely disagree with driving games being better on the PS3 controller, unless you like to use the D-PAD ;) Not to mention the front, but the accelerate/brake triggers are much better on the 360 controller too.

I haven't played any fighting / hack and slash games in quite a while, but I can see how button bashing games are a bit easier on the PS3 thanks to the button response.

Many PS3 exclusives? The Xbox 360 has roughly twice as many exclusive titles than the PS3, according to the quick google search I just did. The exclusives, are however, the only reason I bought a PS3. If using exclusives as a guideline to choose a console, the X360 is the logical choice unless there are some exclusives on the PS3 that stand out more to a person's preferences.

I, and many others, can't use the PS3 controller for extended periods without suffering from aching hands - whereas I've never come across a similar comment about the X360 controller. The original Xbox controllers were a bit big to begin with for some, but they fixed that quite quickly I believe.

There are reasons for and against both, it's up to personal preference... I have both and for me, the Xbox 360 is the clear winner.

In my group of friends, I'm the only one to own a PS3. They don't own one for the same reasons mine doesn't get turned on much & when it does, it's either hooked up to a CSR Elite for GT5 or the odd move game - i've still barely touched games that require the use of the controller - shame.

I should start looking out for aftermarket controllers - I remember getting a couple of my PS One years ago that felt so much nicer to use than the official controller - they were quite similar to original Xbox controllers.

EDIT: Plus - 4 hours to download 2.5GB worth of patches on a 100MBit connection - the PS3 update servers are useless.

Then there's the install to HDD functionality on Xbox 360 + a much better online (you get what you pay for & £3/month isn't exactly extortionate for a relatively well maintained service!).

Forgot to add... there are things I prefer on the PS3 over the X360 too... this isn't completely one-sided - I just think the pros of the 360 exceed the pros of the PS3.

For example, the PS3 has been leagues ahead of 360 in terms of general menu interface since its release and the current iteration is simply gorgeous! Ignoring the controller, it fells like a more "grown-up" console. Everything being integrated since day one, ok - I have the latest versions of both consoles - but I remember the annoyance of a £60-80 wifi adapter. My first PS3 gave me blu-ray when stand-alone players were in the realms of the cost of the PS3. Sure there's more... you get the idea.

Where do you think my experience comes from exactly? I've frequented this forum ages, consoles... And I've seen people with different preferences through out my experience on here. Oh and then there's those real life friends.

point is, Theres no 1 right answer. I've told you a prefer the PS3 pad for somethings, and others also prefer it for somethings, And many like the 360 pad for somethings.

None of this matters. None of its on topic

I made the same point :p lol

Is it too late to buy a car?

But seriously, if you want to play games or watch blu-rays etc, then why not. Tech is always changing, if you'll make use of it then sure.

If its for games then look at the exclusives for each console and make a decision. If Kinect if your thing then Xbox, if it's for some games and blu-ray then PS3.

Will the WiiU actually be any much better than the 360/PS3? All I've heard is talk so far. Considering the 3DS was meant to be amazing I'm not quite sure if I believe the hype.

Yes, not hard to be fair....

Oh god, here we go.

If the man can't decide for himself if he likes the feel of a PS3 controller, then it's his own fault. I hardly think we need to start yet another one of these threads on the back of something as trivial as that.

To answer the thread, I just bought a 360 a few weeks back. I'm actually looking forward to the tons of games I now get to work through. Beats the years I've wasted owning Nintendo stuff from day 1. :p

I'd hardly class dodgy controller design as "trivial" as it's the main interface for all games! You also can't judge it from a quick hold in a store or even a short play at a mates house. So yes, I'd consider it extremely important if you're only going to buy one console whether or not you can play for the periods you want to play for!

Seems quite simple to me, yes it's personal preference - but if you don't realise it could be an issue (I never did before buying my first ps3), then it needs to be pointed out...

It's not logical to think that a company designing a games console would overlook something as simple as the design of the controller!

Part of the reason I'm sure, is that hands in Japan are physically smaller, on average and the controller works better for smaller hands, in general.

Well I know a guy who knows a guy who told him that the new xbox should be out by the end of 2012 and this guy is trustworthy.
