I'd hardly class dodgy controller design as "trivial" as it's the main interface for all games! You also can't judge it from a quick hold in a store or even a short play at a mates house. So yes, I'd consider it extremely important if you're only going to buy one console whether or not you can play for the periods you want to play for!

At the end of the day, the only experience that will hold the OP in good stead, is his own. No need to bog this down with yet another console war.

I'm really struggling with this, why are people even comparing the PS3 and 360 in this thread? We already have 546456873457 threads for that, the OP actually specifically says he doesn't care if it's XBox or Playstation. So I'll try to answer your actual question. No it is not too late especially with the deals that are on at the minute, you won't have to look far just check the normal big name websites for computer/gaming related things. When are the next gen consoles out? Nobody actually knows, most sources indicate late 2013/early 2014 and I would tend to agree with that. As I said it's all just rumours right now but neither Sony or Microsoft have released any concrete information about their next gen plans so you're going to get 12 months at the very least.

i would say, it is late in the game to be buying a brand new one, unless you wont buy a 720 or a ps4 at launch.

so if you wont be buying at launch get a brand new one, otherwise go down the second hand route, save yourself £100 towards the cost of your launch console.

i think there are many more important factors than a 5 minute test drive to consider, you wouldn't pick a new car based on trying 2 out for 5 minutes each.

how many of his mates have either console? so he can borrow games, play online, etc.

is he bothered about playing or even paying for online play?

are there exclusive titles he definitely wants? for example uncharted is ps3 only but gears of war is xbox only, it is a tough decision to make.

many many factors to consider than trying one out for 5 minutes.

Never too late. If anything now is the time to get one. Get a cheap 360 4GB, stick a 16GB memory in and start buying the back catalogue for £5 a pop.

I agree, 10 mins on a preselected game is a waste of time. Might help with the feel on the controller, but that's about it.

All consoles still have some life left in them!

Xbox for me I find is better for multi-platform releases and online gaming
Ps3 is good for media (with web browsing) and blu rays and decent exclusives
Wii is good for nostalgic games from eras past, and the occasional current generation masterpiece.

I'd get a PS3, they seem better value now a days plus are easier to mod if you have the right firmware version
