Is it worth getting a E6600?

Hi been a while since a posted, but thought id ask your advice :)

I recently upgraded my Graphics card and power supply and now feel that my 805d is really letting my system down. im getting a score of just over 5000 with 3d mark 06 and have been told with my card etc i should be seeing over 10,000.

Question is do I bother with the E6600 or go for one of the cheaper core2duo chips and save myself some cash.

My specs are:
Asus P5W-DH Deluxe
EVGA 8800 GTS Superclocked
2 gig Geil RAM (the stuff on offer at the mo)

You will get the same performance with the 6320/6420 if you clock it to 6600 speeds, but the 6600 might clock higher if you want to get uber Ghz's.

The performance you could get with a 50 quid e2160 clocked to 3GHz is surely worth the small outlay. That's what I would do in your case.

Do you think that would surfice in terms of getting me over 10,000 in 3d mark 06?

Because 3d marks matter?

Isn't it more important of how it performs in games, rather than a syntetic benchmark? Either way, I would recommend taking a peak at the OFFICAL E21X0 thread, that is on this same section (CPU's). It will give you a small indication of what the CPU's will perform like.

Easyrider has one, and has been saying the CPU performs pretty damn well for the cost outlay. It overclocks to 3GHZ plus, and is (if you were around PC's back in the day) the new Celeron 300A (if you wasn't, they basic ran at 300MHZ, and usually used to clocked to 450MHZ or so, people used them as a cheap Quake 3 rig).

Anyway, I am straying slightly off topic. Take a look around, the E2xxx series features less cache, but if clocked to 3GHZ it should be enough for gaming, and pretty much any other tasks other than the most demanding video/rendering. I have actually advised a friend just last night (who actually ordered like £700 of stuff from OCUK last night, and it already has been shipped and should arrive tommorw) for him to get the same CPU (an E2160).

I am looking forward to playing around with it I must say :D

Thanks for the advice :) very helpful indeed think ill take it and order a E2160, the reason I mentioned 3d mark is because its the only if you like reference I have as to where id like my PC to be or where it should be performing with the recent upgrades.

Thanks again

Craig

If you can afford it i'd go with an E6320/E6420 personally, i'd only get the 2160 is I was on an extreme budget, which with an 8800 you don't seem to be. :)

2160 or 6320/6420 when clocked you will be pleased with either.

My view is that a 2160 @ 3.2ghz £50 will make you even happier.

Is the extra cache worth £50 more?

I would argue, put anyone in front of two PC's and each running a 6320 C2D and the cheaper 2160 range at the same clock speed and I would bet your bottom dollar that when gaming they would not notice the difference.

I think the only time that it could be worth it is if you use Premiere/3dsMax/Maya/photoshop a LOT, and run a lot of the programs at once. But if that is the case, I think 4 cores is the thing to go for ;)

Personally, I use a lot of Photoshop/Premiere/Flash, so my E4300 is good and ok. I will probably go quad core in several months time, with maybe 4GB of ram, still at the moment, I agree with you competely easy, when gaming, you probably won't be able to tell.

You're not gonna double your 3DMark06 score, whatever CPU you get.

It's primarily a graphics benchmark. I'd wager something else is wrong.

I play a lot of racing sims, which often seem to rely on CPU power more than gfx. Would the extra cache be better in this regard?

Sorry for the the TJ :)

Dark Angel gives you some good advice, but I would have thought that with a e2160 at 3Ghz you would be able to hit 10k in 06.

The highest I've been able to get out of 3DMark06 is around 9800... can't quite get past the 10000 mark.

My specs:-

E6600 @ 3.4ghz
2gb Crucial 5300 RAM @ 756mhz
BFG OC'd 8800GTS
Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3p

Wow, even with that CPU overclock?! Mines only at 3.015 and I managed 10k

I think you need the newest drivers, try the 158.16, or the 158.22 set. They are quite a lot better. Failing that, try opening up your PCI-E bus to 125MHz (from 100MHz default).
