Is it worth getting an SSD?

I've ordered the "Titan Xenomorph" Intel Core i3 540 3.06GHz @ 4.20GHz Nvidia Edition DDR3 System with the GTX 460 768MB for my gaming needs but I would like an SSD. Yes I didn't order it with one due to lowering costs but after thinking about it and what I've read about SSD's, i'm wondering if it's worth amending my order tomorrow morning. I need convincing :D

With an SSD I will want the OS and World of Warcraft installed on to it. Will I see a big difference in gaming with a SSD? If so, which SSD?

I've been looking at the OCZ Vertex 2E 60GB as it seems to have good reviews and it's within my budget which is £100 :).

Any suggestions?

Boot up and loading times of your games and apps will be quicker but actually playing the games you will see no speed increase. I had the ocz you are interested in but have swapped it now for a 120gb bigfoot, they are great and just make everything feel nippier, would not be without now.

Read reviews after reviews when deciding to purchase my first SSD, sometimes I thought if it is being over rated. When I took the plunge on my first SSD i could see why and made a massive difference. First test I ran was a batch command to see how quick it opened 100 programs in one go, my eyes were almost popping outta ma head when it completed within 4-6 seconds. Although I have changed my system a few times and ive never experienced such a big jump as that of a HDD to an SSD. thumbs up.

That entirely depends on the game, if the game does streaming, such as WoW then in game performance will be much better with an SSD.

All it does is make the people above the shadows load a bit quicker in whatever the central town is these days. It makes little to no difference in raids / pvp / general play.

I understand that it won't make an impact on gameplay, but surely loading times would be effected? I hope so. After your comments and reviews I've read i'm taking the plunge. I'm ordering it today!

Roll on the end of the week! I have no patient when it comes to new things like this, I just want it to be here now!

For me HDD -> SSD has seen the biggest notable performance increase in a computer system for a long long time.

Even when I went Barton 2500 to Core 2 Duo the increase in performance wasn't as noticeable.

Mechanical hard drives have been the bottleneck in computer performance for years.

Yes you should, ocz vertex 2e

Exactly what I'm thinking about buying.

The only thing that makes me hesitate, is the number of people posting on the OCZ forums that either:
1) Have had problems flashing the firmware on it (which still seems to be in a state of flux! I thought it would have settled down by now!!).
2) Problems even getting the drive to be seen in the BIOS.
3) Problems with SATA controllers, especially on older motherboards. And advice even on the OCZ forum as to what version is best to use... various at times depending on who you speak to!
4) Drives that only last a few days or weeks before giving up the ghost.

Now I appreciate that people only tend to post on forums like the one I'm talking about, if they have problems. And that it's probably only effects a small minority of drives ... but it does tend to make me stop and think.

I ordered a Vertex 2 last week, bought the 120gig version (allthough I could have prob got away with the 60gig one). It arrived the next day. Installed it without a hitch. I didnt have to flash the drive or anything to it at all.

It really is the best upgrade ive done in years. my PC zips along now. It boots up in no time at all and even loading heavy stuff like photoshop is stupidly quick.

Do it, you wont be dissapointed.

I just wish i had bought a vertex 2 at a greater size. Made the investment, saved up. Because these things last for years and you get a good value for money, but they are progressing so fast that there is no resell value in them. So although i am happy and satisified with the vertex 1 64gb, i am stuck with it for next 50 years :D

Yes, except for capacity. Essentially both the 100GB Vertex 2 and 120GB Vertex 2E are in fact 128GB drives with 28GB and 8GB, respectively, held in "reserve" for wear levelling etc.

More reserve isn't really necessary for desktop SSDs so the 2Es are more popular for their higher GB/£ ratio.

I noticed quite a big jump in speed of win 7 and games loading even ones not on the sdd loading, And win 7 just runs and feels instant and fast i could not go back to hdd now.

just buy another 64gb if you can afford it and raid them, thats what i did and it is rapid

I haven't brought the SSD yet. The one i'm looking at is the OCZ Vertex 2E 60GB, I'm sure if I had such problems it'll have a Warrantee or something that I could use right?

I will def be buying one though, I wanna to experience this hype :D
