Is it worth getting WP7?

Anyone have any thoughts on WP7, dont know an awful lot about its cons, but it looks like a very clean and slick interface and the LG optimus 7 can be had for around £215 at the moment, worth getting?

For £215 it's defiantly worth trying! The next update should include turn by turn navigation and IE 9. What's really missing after that... can't think of anything essential?

Biggest problem with WP7 at the moment (that 7.5 won't address) is lack of apps.

Mango/7.5 is sorely needed as most people are used to some sort of multi tasking support, and I think this is somewhat holding back some developers.

My concern with it is that they are still behind the curve, by the time 7.5 rolls out - Apple and Google will already be prepping their next iterations.

Having said that it's a really nice, slick OS to use.

I moved from a Galaxy S to a Omnia 7 about a month ago and haven't looked back.

It's slick, there are some very nice apps available and Zune music is nothing short of amazing.

Every area it lacks in (esp. turn by turn navigation) is now due sometimes round Aug. with the Mango update, which also includes MSN Messenger integration, Twitter integration, Multi-Tasking, Bing Audio-Vision (think advanced Shazam), Visual Voicemail, Intergrated Bar Code reader, Stand Alone Podcast support (Podcasts use Zune on PC atm), SMS dictation, Hand Writing Support, IE 9 Mobile with HTML 5.

Also MS recently released a load of new API's for developers so we'll soon see Apps like Layar (confirmed) etc.

Currently using a Nexus One and an HD7 as my two phones at the moment. Whilst the WP7 device looks slick, it has far too many bugs, far too many missing features, and is currently too "dry" in terms of available apps and games.

I'd wait.

One thing missing for me is being able to use mp3's as ring tones
Only other gripe is my omnia has 8gb of memory which is now running out
Apps wise I haven't downloaded too many but the games are quite good

Pretty much same as me. I picked up the WP7 device to write apps for, from this standpoint Mango will allow a lot more freedom and creativity for developers (better live tile integration for one).

You can't do this out of the box, but it relatively straightforward if you have the device developer unlocked - which is easier to do than to jailbreak iOS or root android.

Certainly no less painstaking than on iOS in my view.

Being an omnia 7 owner coming from android, i have to say the ui is streets ahead of the competition.

Its implementation on the omnia 7 is as slick as the iphone with buttery smooth scrolling and the screen is amazing too. However, whichever ap7 phone you choose, you have to accept its still very young compared to android and ios. It will be the little things that annoy you.

For eg, I'm on t-mobile and saw they had made a cool little app for you to check your account etc but guess what? iphone and android only
I also use AV forums and again they have a cool app but again iphone and android only

If your willing to accept the above and are just after a very slick phone which is a pleasure to use for all the main stuff (voice, text, email, facebook, twitter) than it really is worth a punt imo :)

Cheers for all the input.

I'm so tempted to take the plunge, but some of the comments posted here is the concerns I had. Seems the platform is still very young and has MS quirks, but that LG phone is so nicely specced, I would have to pay around double the price for similar specced Android which is so annoying as that was my first, but I love the clean and elegant look of the WP7 UI, seems like it would make a better everyday phone if MS iron out some of the issues on WP7 and app market starts growing. I guess I could always buy a OSF to play around with and have the LG as the workhorse phone.

I have an HD7 and love it. There are plenty of apps out there, and it is growing all the time. There are a few features I took for granted that this phone does not have, but now I use it all the time, I have honestly forgotten what they are!

What aspects of it do you love?

Also do you have to use Zune to manage all the files on it? or can you manage all that directly through my computer or something. Apparently WP7 doesn't come with a file manager, how would you manage other files like PDF?

One thing that would be cool is if the LG Optimus 7 was rootable to put Android on it.

The size of the screen, its easy to use, internet works well.

I do use Zune, as you have to to get the updates and upgrades. Though very very rarely. When I take pics they are uploaded to my skydrive. The email is easy as well, no issues, no problems, it just does what I want it to. I charge the battery every night, but then, I do use the internet a lot. The gripes are the no mp3 ringtones etc, but its not a massive problem, it doesn't really bother me.

I'm intrigued, what are the bugs and the "dry" features?

I know a couple that annoy me a little when they strike so i'm intrigued to see what your are because mine certainly aren't deal breakers!:p

Yeah, you need zune to add and remove files and leads me to what annoys me the most, to put documents (word, powerpoints and excel sheets as well as pdfs) on you need to download them onto your phone via the net (ie send them to yourself in email or dropbox). Once on your phone they are viewable easily within the office area or the Adobe PDF app. It's just a little annoying when you don't have access to wifi if you want to download a 20MB powerpoint presentation.

Overall though I find there are plenty of apps now, although the lack of a UK tide app is a little annoying and in general the positives far outweigh any negatives, especially over Android. I think WP7 fits nicely between the overbearing nature of iOS and the free for all that is Android. MS seem to be taking a big hand in stuff like "rooting", not actively encouraging it but helping sort out the issues people found after using a certain tool, unlike Apple who still try to insist it's illegal to jailbreak...

^ hmmm that file transferring thing is pretty off putting, is this likely to get changed with the Mango update? I remember reading somewhere you can select your WP7 device in windows to work as usb storage device.

Took the plunge and ordered the LG Optimus 7, might regret it, but I keep my phones long so hopefully the OS will pick up soon in terms of features and apps and also modding.
