is it worth going to the 4790k from the 4690k?

as in the title?
Ive recently just bought the 4690k but upgraded earlier than planned due to a wee bonus..

so my thoughts are next year would it be worth getting a 4790k fitted to my board? what gains will I see?

You would only see gains in tasks/games that make use of hyperthreading that the i7 has. Very few games make use of this feature.

For gaming, the i5 is sufficient. Your money would be better spent on a GPU or resolution upgrade.

Actually, what GPU is that?

If you have 2 GPU's I would recommend it. Otherwise there is no gain. I had stuttering in some games with just an i5 (very few games but it did happen) That I don't get now with my i7.

With a single GPU though i5 is fine for games.

I upgraded from i5 2500k to a 4790k a few months back, was a solid upgrade with both running 4.5ghz I can notice a small difference but maybe not a great one.

Still having hyperthreading covers you for the odd game that uses more than 4 thread.

What's your budget?
ill be looking to spend between £250 to £300 on one.

having a quick look through some cards and I'm thinking the gtx 970 would be a nice upgrade.
I was looking at the r9 3xx series but I don't know if there much of an upgrade over my overclocked 7950

Really isn't worth it at all. You'd be hard pressed to find a difference especially for the outlay. As others have recommended, gpu upgrade is a far bigger bang for the buck/yen/zlotty/euro/etc

It depends what you use it for.

EDIT: For primarily gaming absolutely not.

Here's a good review which actually places the 390 closer to the 980 more often than the 970.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/sapphire-nitro-r9-390-8g-d5,4245.html

As for how much of an upgrade between a 7950 and a 390 it is a big one. I've owned an MSI TFIII 7950 boost and an MSI TFIV 290x and when I originally got the 290x it was slower than a 290x or 390 are today (driver optimisations etc) and it was a big leap.
Sadly the different cpu will have a small effect on graphics score (very small when I compare my other examples) but even so this shows a 66% increase between the two mentioned cards on there stock clocks.

I also keep a folder of game benches which will contain pages for both cards if you are interested. but the end result is it's a good boost and personally I think it is the better choice over a 970 even for 1080p now we have vsr and dsr.

390 or 970 would both be good, i went from 7950 to 290x which is similar to a 390. Even though my 290x cards are poor overclockers compared to my 7950s, i still got a decent fps increase.

Gaming on single GPU no, 2/3 gpu yes, Video encoding yes.

I done this very upgrade. It clocked slightly better so got a bit more in game but on rendering when editing videos..> my god its a monster.

I used my 8350 for video editing back and forth ive not tried any with the 4690k yet.

I think at the moment ill upgrade my gpu and then possibly middle of next year Ill start looking for a cheap 4790k as then I could go for a second card and see the benefit of it.
