With all this talk of overclocking e6600's i have decided to upgrade my stock cooler that seems to keep my chip at about 47degrees idle for one that will fit into my case (antec p180) and also my mobo (evga 680) some suggestions would be nice.

I have seen sone recent posts about lapping cpu's and heatsinks. Its not something i am familiar with but can guess it is a method for getting each surface super smooth for better heat transfer. Whilst i am changing the cooler would you suggest this would be a good thing to do or will the cooler change suffice?

Have you examined the CPU to see if the IHS is concave or convex, if it is then lapping will give you a benefit, the same applies for the base of the HSF.

Also lapping the CPU will void your warranty so another thing to consider.

i'm interested in lapping too....it would be great if OcUK offered a lapping kit. It would sell, I'm sure of it.

ocuk will never sell a lapping kit because it invalidates your cpu warranty.

that said, I did my cpu last week and I seem to have lost 3-5c idle and about 10c on load with watercooling.

very impressed, best temp drop I've had for £5 and about an hours work.

So does changing your graphics card cooler, but they sell those don't they?

well yes but bear in mind you can still rma 9 times out of 10 if you put the old cooler back on, I've done it loads of times.

once you've lapped a cpu its 100% obvious its happened..

second fitting an aftermarket cooler is the work of a screwdriver and a steady hand, not water, sandpaper and abbrasive actions.

Different league altogether.

If you are getting <70c on 100% load at the clocks you want then there is little need to lap. If you want better temps and don't mind sacrificing your warrenty then go for it. I personally would only lap if I felt that temps were a problem and were possibly holding back my willingness to overclock further.

All three of my previous e6600's were concave and benefited from lapping seeing temp drops from 5c - 12c load, allowing me more room to add further vcore to increase my overclocks.

Using a razor blade or anything that has is a straight/true edge and a bright light, place the straight edge on the cpu and check for light coming through. If light is visible between the straight edge and the cpu the cpu is concave or convex havn't heard of many that are convex though.
