is it worth overclocking?

Hi i have a i5-4690k cpu at stock its 3500mhz

it idles at 28 and on load about 40 - 46

So i said to my self ...i wonder what this overclocking lark is all about.

In the ASUS Uebios (z97-k) menu it seems pretty easy to oc. So i do that and it autotunes it to 28!% oced effectively to 4480mhz.

Only thing is now under load my cpu goes up to 60 - 64

Considering i didn't really have a problem with any games maxed out should i have bothered overclocking the cpu in the first place?

Maybe try dropping it back to stock, type the voltage manually and see how far you can overclock on stock voltage. That ASUS auto tune thingy likes to tweak BCLK which shouldn't really be touched.

If you don't need the the extra MHz it's probably not worth adding voltage.

Saying that, most of us are overclockers who like to push things to the max whether its needed or not :)

if you have a big card then you'll need it OCd anyway, i think for the 7990 the ideal for my old i5 is about 4.6.........above 4.6 you really need to know what you're doing, therefore i stay at 4.6 :D

you can download the numbers and what you need to adjust anyway, just google ``how do i overclock an i5 2500 via an Asus mobo`` and just print it off

finally my old i5 2500 handled a 7990 easily and that's after i overclocked the card as well..........but unfortunately the 7990 couldn't handle its own overclock via AMD Catalyst, so it needs to be backed off.............but this has nothing to do with the cpu, more like it needs Water cooling

If you don't need more speed then I'd certainly set it to stock voltage. Getting extra clock speed at stock voltage though is a free win, no reason not to. (I know Bluntwrapped already said this but it's good advice so thought I'd repeat it)

I have a 4770k I now run at stock I was at 4.6ghz before and in all honesty have not noticed any difference at all in game or other tasks.

i think maybe ill set it back at stock and if i come up against anything which i struggle to run will oc it then.

not really sure about voltage settings..atm mine is at 0.76 but ranges from that to 1.248v im guessing lower is better? :D

Higher voltage = more heat, but voltage has to be pumped up to make the processor stable at higher clock speeds. So the minimum voltage to get stability at a certain clock is the best.

overclock it, go for it.

My 4690k is at 4.7GHz 24/7 and never goes above 50 degrees.

Fantastic CPU

Fantastic CPU

even under stresstesting and heavy load? surprised at that as i have same cpu with a tower cooler...

ahh wait you have watercooling?

I just overclock because the performance is there and I will be upgrading before it is dead so might as well push it as far as possible now.

my 4770k is at 4.8 at only 60 degrees, max Prime..........no i'm just kidding:p:p
i had you there:p

but it is at 22 degrees 3.8........... no fans at all on the cooler........i expect it'll go crazy though, but so far it's deffo better than the i5 2500, this rig is much much faster, probably the SSD, this thing starts in about 3 seconds the XP took 3 mins..

both the cheap Asus and this Gigabyte, are miles better than the ASrock...much more stable.

this rig will be hard to overclock, the Asus was dead easy, but the gigabyte menu is way more complicated and detailed

i cant begin to overclock it until i get rid of all this spam/ rubbish apps and stupid Win tune up software trying to screw me up........the screen is exploding with junk, surfing the web is impossible

I am running a 4770k at 4.2 with 780 sli.
Cards are running at factory settings ( 967 mhz ).
I clocked cpu down to stock and apart from benching, there is no big difference.
You can probably oc a bit.
A good solid oc with average temps won't hurt.

I'll be looking to eek 4.8 out of this chip for benching, but for daily gaming use ill probably just stay at stock.
