Is it worth playing Oblivion?

I thought Skyrim was better than Oblivion in pretty much every way. However, it just didn't captivate me like Oblivion. I kept going thinking "this game is amazing!" but, alas, it never won me over. I think I managed 60 hours. Not sure how many hours I played Oblivion, but probably 4 or 5 times as many as I did Skyrim.

I didn't find skyrim to be as good as oblivion, as far as immersion and general re-playability is concerned. Even the guild side-quests in oblivion were longer and of higher quality than the whole skyrim main quest-line. Everyone of the guild quests in oblivion were a real treat, can't say the same about pretty much any of the skyrim quests, they were just not as fun.

Oblivion kept me playing for years, the main quest-line and guild quests were that long. Skyrim is now just about the mods. Even the music from skyrim is no where near the same quality as that from oblivion, even though Jeremy Soule did both, I wonder what happened there. The only thing Skyrim has on oblivion is visuals.

If you don't already own oblivion then I would definitely recommend it.

Cheers guys

Managed to get it on Gamersgate for £3.74 :D

Didn't know it was on sale at Gamersgate, will probably pick it up for the price of a kebab.

It seems stupid though with the different versions available .. I wish Bethesda would just merge the GOTY and GOTY Deluxe together.

Oblivion GOTY for £3.74 or add 8 pieces of mediocre DLC for £15.

The first Elder Scrolls game I played was Skyrim and loved it to death, just wondering is it worth playing Oblivion, or is it not as good and would it be a bit 'samey' to enjoy and be turning Skyrim back on!?

when it first came out everyone raged how great it was sort of like skyrim. i thought must be good so went and got it installed it played it uninstalled it and tossed in bin ! :p thought it was bad myself.

personal op is skyrim is awesome oblivion is okish (others will disagree)

Oblivion felt much larger in some ways than Skyrim because the cities in Oblivion were actually cities, and not the glorified villages with 5 houses you get in Skyrim.

From a gameplay perspective, I think the content is better than Skyrim.

The Oblivion cities are fantastic, they make the Skyrim ones look like tiny tiny villages :)

Same as a few people here Oblivion is a lot better then Skyrim, I don't know why but I just couldnt "click" with it, just feels lifeless and dull or something

Agreed. I wouldn't be surprised if all of the Skyrim villages put together were smaller than the Imperial City.

Oblivion is a brilliant game, but you will need IU mods. The only thing I didn't like about it when I first played it, was how small, repetitive and streamlined the world and gameplay was compared to Morrowind. Despite not being as beautiful, detailed and technically impressive as Skyrim (IMO, even with mods), it still beats it with story and atmosphere.

I put 320 hours into one save on Oblivion, I just got lost in the world. :(

Same here. And Skyrim didn't really grab me either.

I think it's because after spending so many hours in Oblivion, the series has lost its immersion for me. I tire of being the only dude in the land who's capable of accomplishing anything, whilst everyone else roams around aimlessly waiting for my return.

A modded Oblivion is awesome however. Skyrim felt like a console version of Oblivion.

That's the consoles fault, the lack of physical content in the game i.e houses, trees and what not, lack of city content, its all because the consoles couldn't handle it all. Fantastic isn't it. :D

Thank god for modders.

I just started playing this after installing it (thanks Kerplunk for the Gamersgate offer) and my god I am being flooded with nostalgia. The last time I played Oblivion properly was over 5 years ago on the Xbox 360. I just closed my first oblivion gate of this save and it felt amazing.

I'm not sitting on the face or anything but.. I loved oblivion awesome game.. when skyrim came out though, it just felt like the natural progression of the series and I loved that too

This Nehrim seems awesome so far, loving it, and actually prefer that it's in German, no idea why, just such an easy language to listen to.

Deserves it's own thread.

A well modded Oblivion looks and plays really well. It is a great game in it's own right (adoring fan ftw!) however those Oblivion planes can get extremely tedious. Get the Vilja NPC addon btw from the Nexus as she is an independantly voice NPC character with her own questline and about 5000 lines of dialogue voiced by the developer herself.
