After a little info.

My rig is used mainly for gaming on a 22" monitor at 1680x1050.
My rig consists of these main componants:

E6300 @3.0Ghz
4Gb XMSII
Gigabyte P35-DS3R
Gigabyte 8800GT

Im thinking about selling the E6300 and replacing it with a E5X00 chip in hopes of hitting 4Ghz, i dont buy into quads just yet, i know they will be needed eventually but i just dont see it yet so a fast dual core is my thinking. im not seeing my GT struggle so is it worth replacing the CPU or ill it be so little increase that i may aswell just wait?

If your looking to hit 4Ghz id have thought the E8400 would have been more up your street.
there are plenty threads around with user's hitting 4+ghz with these dual core chips

I guess what im really wanting to know then is would 4Ghz give me benefits id notice over 3?

And yeh 3.1 is about the chips limit with the memory i have, just dont know if more is worth the outlay?

As i said i wouldnt bother. \you dont sound like you need the extra power really.

Save up and change your shystem in about a years time, when the refresh of Nehalem is out

Waste of time. Chances of you hitting 4Ghz with a E5200 are extremely remote anyway. Most max out around 3.6Ghz. Others are stuck at only 3.2Ghz. Some have hit 4Ghz but they are extremely rare. I have one in the same mobo as you and it will only do 3.6Ghz no matter how many volts i give it. It's not the board either as it has been in my Asus P5E and a Biostar P35 board as well.

Better off looking at a E7000/8000 series for a upgrade.

e8500! can EAISILY hit 4.3 Ghz (as i have :P) i have barely pushed it and i dont think i want to! and the difference between 4 and 3, i went from 3.1 to 4.3 similar to the change youll get and i do notice it! takes about 2 mins to install most games and loading screens go by in seconds! unless you get an i7 then youre right, dont do quad but if youve got a lot to spare then it is worth it (from what ive heard) would strongly suggest e8500 but of course it's your choice, if your planning a new rig soon then forget it and save up for an i7
