Is it worth selling A64X2 to go Core 2 DUO E6600?

Then why did you upgrade.

I upgraded because I always want more speed. My pc is my workstation.I edit create video/music/game etc...

In simple terms my pc is faster than before.I really do not undertand what the problem is?

What were you expecting?

lol :p

I upgraded just for the crack :D I spend more time in my pc than on it. There is no problem just that unless you like messing with your pc and changing stuff out its probably not worth it it will be faster but not night and day. Im not saying dont do it but an X2 4400 is still a good chip especially when clocked

Nobody is denying its faster - its almost like you are trying to justify it now.

Its just not MILES faster

Sell of your old kit (other than gfx card) £230 and put it towards new mobo (£150), new ram (£170), new CPU (£250) and your total upgrade is only going to cost you £340!

Sell your parts while you still can and in a way you are saving money.

Justify what?

My upgrade cost around 150 quid lol

Nothing and it is MILES faster!

Backing up a dvd in dvd shrink in analysis 1400 fps!

Now thats a lot faster than my opty 170 :p

I think if we are honest most of us do it for the same reason ;)

Although, I am trying to resist the Conroe upgrade madness over my current X24400 at the mo...Tough though, & I can feel myself weakening

Well, I think about it this way. If I sell my old rig now, Opteron 170, A8N32 Deluxe, 2GB RAM I would get about £300 or a bit lower. Upgrading to Conroe 6600, P5WDH, 2GB Corsair C5 will cost me about £550-ish, not bad.
I paid almost £400 for my GFX card ALONE, 1900XT-X and I know a lot of people shelling out tons of money for a new GFX so why think about saving a few hundred quid for a whole new system?
To me, it's totally justifiable. This Conroe train is too fast for me to miss it. Gotta have it ;)
One thing I'm sure is video/music encoding will be much faster.
Updated: Just biten the bullet and bought C2D E6600 and P5W DH from a competitor for £210 and £139 respectively. Can't wait, woo hoo.

If your main focus is encoding type work then why on earth were you using an AMD system prior to Conroe - Intel have always been better at the grunt work?

I have never got the point in this encoding is faster, unless your a business or a part of a major illegal dvd ripping ring, your unlikely to be encoding that much, or at least enough to be worried about 10mins saved here and there.

I mean dvd shrink takes what ? 2 hours max on a medium spec pc? (Never used that prog but imagine its something similar)

If its for home use, just do it while your away from the pc (at night, while your out shopping). I mean of course if your buying new you want the best for your money but, upgrading to save a few mins on encoding - (£150 better spent on beer or having a good time...thats an idea do your encoding while your out on the lash :p spending the £150 saved)

I think the ‘real’ reason people see the need to upgrade is so they can say my pc is better than yours and buy some benchmark scores.

I'm with Mav on this one - for me I won't see enough of an improvement to make it worth the money. I'd rather spend the cash upgrading my GFX card as it would make far more of a difference where it counts to me (games :D ) than anything else I could spend the cash on.

Well, it was Intel P4 NW 3.2 and no where near as fast as Opteron 170 and because Opteron offered the best performance at the time.

Not true.
The Intel single cores are marginally better.
But the dual core intels are bandwidth starved, and as such, the dual core A64s/Optys are actually better.

To answer the OP, is it worth it? Nope. The difference wont be enough to justify the cost.
If you really want to spend some money, then spend it on parts that can be used on future systems that would be useful. Like a higher resolution/bigger monitor, or a seconds screen. Both which will come in handy for the type of work you are doing. More memory. More/bigger HDDs. A reliable backup solution. Fancy keryboard/mouse. All will benefit your current systems usage and future ones.

Most people's system's biggest bottleneck is the hard drive, so I've decided to get one of the new 150Gb Raptors - which as said above will benefit any future system too... and go Conroe next year.
