...and even a 6990 will be a very questionable upgrade unless you are working with a limitless budget. Which if you did, you would probably be wanting SLI or Xfire anyway.
And SLI'ing 480s or 580 would explode your PSU.
I mean, the 6990 might blow us all away. But looking at it conservatively, you are skipping this generation...if the 580 is considered the same generation as the 6000s and somehow apart from the 5000s and 400s.
