hi all
i have just bought an asus m5a97 r2 mobo and kingston ddr3 hyper x genesis ram 1866mhz ram to upgrade my pc from an asus m4a78 and ddr2 ram

what i am wanting to know is will my amd 965 black edition cpu last me another 2 years until ddr4 is out? or do i really need to upgrade to a new fx (if i am getting fx i want an 8 core) the 8320 or would the 8150 be enough? i dont really want to upgrade the cpu if i dont have to, my 965 seems to run the new games fine...far cry 3, moh warfighter, bf3
what do you all think?
thanx

What GPU do you have?

An FX-83## (Piledriver) is a lot faster than your P-II x4, so it may give you a nice upgrade, if you would notice it.... your not necessarily going to as it depends what you use it for.
If you do video encoding and stuff like that you will see the difference.
If you have a top end GPU you may see increased FPS in your games (tho not much)

If all you do is play BF3 / Crysis2/3, MOHW.... on something like a GTX 560, 6850/70, 7770....?
Your probably not going to notice the extra muscle.

Other than that, if you have money to burn and just want to double your cores (LOLOLO) go for it.

Don't bother with the FX-81## (Bulldozer)

gfx card is msi 6950 and im thinking about buying one of the new 8000 series when they are released but i will see how my 6950 goes with new games when they come out
...and no i dont have money to burn thats why i would preffer to keep using my 965 if it will last me 2 years

You'd be as well try getting some more speed out the 965.
If you're happy enough with how it is performing right now, and aren't really wanting to spend more money, you should stick with it!

The cpu will be good for a few years yet especially when overclocked. Some people would recommend upgrading the gpu before cpu and mobo as its more cost effective. Gpu upgrade (dependant on the gpu you get) will cost you probs around £150 for a decent one. However a cpu and mobo wil cost you twice that if not more

thanx all
im upgrading the mobo and ram as i currently only have usb 2 and sata2 and ddr2..i bought an ssd and want to run it at sata 3 and external hd at usb 3
i think i will be keeping the cpu for a while now then and see how it goes until i get some more money and then i will get a piledriver :)

Bumping your 965 to near 4Ghz would cope with anything you want to throw at it (without being silly).
The same reason I'm holding on to my 4Ghz Q9650 for now.

i havnt installed it yet man...still waiting for it to be delivered :p

I'm on a OC'd 955 and I have no probs, I have 8gb of DDR3 though so that probably helps, plays games plenty well enough on my 560ti so ill leave it until the next gen i5's are out and DDR4 before I do anything else.
