Is it worth upgrading my CPU?

I'm currently running s 2600x on an x470 Gaming Plus MB with 16gb DDR4 3200 ram which has served me perfectly well over the past 12 months or so. However, I'm now doing more and more work with Handbrake so I'm wondering whether upgrading to the 3900x will see big enough performance increases i.e. reducing in encoding times, to warrant the upgrade?

I don't want to have to upgrade my mobo or ram, and looking at the MSI site there's a bios update to support the 3900x.

Looking for peoples thoughts

a 2700x is a good cpu. However the 3rd gen ryzen are even better by a good margin. the 3900x is even more awesome (but relatively expensive). regarding handbrake - yes the 3900x will be much better for that. unfortunately your mobo isn't the best but will work with a 3900x. As long as you aren't manually overclocking or running your cpu to its max all the while you should be OK. Probably most of the time your cpu wont be pushed (not much software will use all 24 threads - but handbrake will). the 3900x will be good for light loads as the two chiplets effectively means that you have double the cache (of an 8 core or less) which will help with games (that only 4 - 8 cores simultaneously - note that you will find all your 24 threads being used at some point but most software wont use all 24 threads simultaneously). In the near future I imagine that more software will utilise more threads simultaneously.

as suggested - perhaps make sure that your case has all its fans installed and perhaps change (increase) your case fans speed profile, or even cable tie a spare 120mm fan to point down on your vrm's just in case.

from the passmark benchmarks a 2700x = 16953 and a 3900x = 31907

wow - big performance increase (at times). yes perhaps render times halved for handbrake.

Also as seen here with your motherboard you are recommended to have some major airflow over your VRM's with a 3900X installed.

I don't know if I'm missing something, but I can't actually see my exact mobo listed. The closest is the X470 Gaming Plus (Max) and that shows 'minor airflow recommended'. Are you saying that the X470 and X570 Gaming Plus have identical VRM's?

Nice table btw, very helpful.

Regardless of what cpu you have the motherboard needs good airflow. If you keep the 3900 at stock, i don't see any issues, esp when the compatability table shows that it supports that cpu.
