Is it worth upgrading my GTX275 for this...

I currently have a GTX275 and game at 1366x768.

I quite fancy upgrading my GPU. My 275 isn't really struggling with anything, I just fancy a newer DX11 card.

I like the look of this EVGA Superclocked GTX460 on TO http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18328181

I currently have a Q6600 @ 3.6Ghz and 4Gb ram.

I've been on to the TechArp GPU comparison and is has the spec for both card listed as follows, on std clocks:

GTX 275 896 MB

Texture Fill Rate: 50,650 MT/s
Pixel Fill Rate: 17,724 MP/s
Memory Bus Width: 448 bits
Memory Badwidth: 127 GB/s

GTX 460 1GB

Texture Fill Rate: 37,700 MT/s
Pixel Fill Rate: 21,600 MP/s
Memory Bus Width: 256 Bits
Memory Badwidth: 115.2 GB/s

So, is there any point in me upgrading from a GTX275 to a 460 at my lowly resolution?

Thanks.

no but overclock 460 would see slight improvement

Thanks man.

My 275 is running an OC of 705/1530/1250 so probably not much in it for me other than the occasional bit of DX11 candy.

Sounds like it's best to wait for a 560Ti when the prices lower? Is my Q6600 @ 3.6 likely to bottleneck a 560Ti?

Thanks.

Thats good to know, thanks.

When 560Ti's hit sub £150 I think i'll snap one up. Asus at £157 isn't a million miles away so pre-Xmas hopefully!!

See my sig, I'm using a lower clocked Q6600 than you and with effectively a 580. To be truthful I thought I might regret the purchase somewhat, but it's been a great upgrade, no noticeable bottleneck. Granted if I had an i5 2500k no doubt I'd be getting even higher minimum, average and maximum frame rates, but I'm more than satisfied with the performance while still running this old cpu along side it. :)

Yep, I can't quite part with my Q6600 yet and it's getting a new lease of life with an Antec Kuhler 620 attached. So much more overclocking headroom than when I had a Tuniq 120.

I've had it running at 3.8 but I'm going to have to go over 1.5v to try and get it stable and I'm not sure I want/need to push it that far.

Hoping a GPU upgrade will keep the old girl useable for a wee while yet!

If you're not struggling in games. Why not wait 6 months till the new series of cards come out. Or pick up something good on the MM

Very true. It's just the whole "wait 6 months" thing doesn't wash when you've got the upgrade itch :D

I still think that at my res, a 560Ti at sub £150 would be good value and keep me going for a couple of years (assuming i5 upgrade).

Have you thought about upgrading your monitor? You'll get more out of your gpu upgrade if you do, in fact, you may even notice an improvement in fps with your current gpu. I'd make a monitor your next upgrade, seeing as you have though upgrade itch. (Only one way to cure it. :D)

I keep telling myself I need to upgrade my GTX 275 as well. However truth be told BF3 still looks amazing on it. I can play any other game at my resolution which is higher than yours just fine.

I have the itch that you speak of though and I can't get rid of it no matter how much I wanna wait for the new AMD 7xxx cards...

I used to game on a 24" 1080p but gave that to the old dear during her Photoshop phase :D

I use a Sony 32D3000 HDTV which is 1366 x 768. It's sounds carp but it actually works really well for the set up I have as I sit about 2.5m away from the screen. It has the added bonus of allowing me to max some games with average hardware too. I can also swicth it to the 52" 1080p in the livingroom but it's difficult to game from the couch.

I've got my eye on a 40" 1080p at some point for PC/2nd TV but the friggin recession will have to end before I go down that route.

Ah, fair enough if using an HDTV. I did wonder if that was what it might be, rather than just a low res monitor. :)

Yeah, that was a surprise to me too. I was getting 35 to 50 FPS outdoors and more indoors on the high settings. It was that that made me question getting an upgrade in the first place.

At that resolution, you'll be more CPU-bound and you likely won't notice big performance differences if comparing apples to apples, DX10 to DX10 for example. However, you would gain support for the DirectX 11 features.

Thanks Nick, good honest answer.

It seems I've already talked myself out of the EVGA GTX460 SC :(

Simply gaining DX11 over DX10 isn't reason enough to upgrade right now so I'm gonna do the sensible thing and hold off.

Thanks all.
