Is it worth upgrading Q6600 to Q9450?

Hi all,

quite taken with the price on the Q9450 this week, particularly if I can offload my Q6600 for a decent price.

Do the Q9450s overclock well? With my mobo/cooler in my sig, do you think I should be able to reach quite high speeds?
Does the increased cache make a significant difference?
Is there a different Q9xx0 I should be going for instead, better VFM?
Overall, is it worth doing the upgrade? I don't plan on going to i7 for a while, but I don't mind throwing 100 pounds or so at the system if it will speed up a bit.

Cheers!

the only thing youll be getting out of the 9450 is better overclockability...thats it. core i7 outperforms quads by a bit so id go for i7

personally i wouldn't bother, the q9550/q9560 can get quite high overclocks however not so sure the q9450 can match them and even then not sure if you'll notice the difference other than in temps. Maybe wait and see what i5 can do? Personally i haven't found anything to tear me away from my trusty q6600 yet.

Yeah I don't fancy spending £600 or so on a new i7 setup, if upgrading to the Q9450 won't make a huge difference over an OCed Q6600, I won't bother. Thanks! :)

I pondered an upgrade a few months back, CPC did a massive CPU benckmark, and looking at the graphs there just no way I can justify the cash, performance gains for the outlay are just not there at the moment.

If I was starting from scratch, sure I would go straight for an i7, but as an upgrade it just makes no sense to upgrade the Q6600.

I think my chip has a good 2 years left in it, possibly a graphics upgrade in 12-18 months

sell Q6600 for 85-90 & buy Q9450 for 130ish......that was what I was planning a month or so ago but tbh I landed at the same place as you.
Might go for it some day but for now my 3.6 Q6600 does me fine.

the q6600 is a milestone in intel cpus, its like the t1000 in the terminator movies. stick with what u have

Im thinkin about upgrading from my 2.2gz E4500, would the Q9450 be a good choice for me or should i go for a Q6600. Q9450 seems good value @ £129.98 isnt it, the Q6700 is @ £130.99 & not as good a chip is it

Im contemplating a 45nm Yorkfield, as max OC I've hit so far on my Maximus Formula is 3.2Ghz out of my X3210 G0 65nm Kentsfield.

I just feel like this CPU can't feed my 4870 Crossfire enough, and I want to push beyond an 'average' overclock to get every ounce out of my system.

I've put it on the table, and will think about it for future :)

What about selling my Q9450 and buying a Q9550?

Seriously not going to notice that much of the difference there. Just for the slightly extra cache and clock speed its not worth the effort to sell and buy it. It does however overclock a bit better, but the q9450 is no slouch in that department either. Just get better cooling and take your overclock further.
