Is it worth upgrading?

Hi chaps

I'm still struggling with what to do, my 8800GTS 640MB soldiers on but I would like an upgrade for Crysis 2 and other titles that are due, thing is, i'm not spending anymore than £250 and I dont fancy an ATI card so thats the 560 then.

Is it worth it? I mean will there be that much more of a difference or should I skip this gen? I've been struggling with picking a card for ages as I just cant decide if a sub £250 is going to make a noticable difference and I refuse to spend any more than that these days as I have other priorities

I'm currently gaming at 1680 but intend to go 27" @ 1080P at some point this year

I would think you would see a big difference. I upgraded from a 8800gts 512 mb to a gtx460 as the old card was really struggling with bfbc2. Seeing that a gtx560 is equivalent of nearly a gtx480 I'm sure you'll see a good difference.

Will be massive difference, and 560 is pretty good value too, though the 570 is only just outside your budget so it may be worth sitting tight til it drops a bit n comes into budget

Yeah i'd like to wait for the 570's to drop to around £250 as I know it will happen as soon as I buy something, sods law! ut Crysis is 3 weeks off :(

So if I get a sub £200 560 like the Gigabyte model with only 1GB of ram to tide me over until Keplar, do you think i'll notice a massive difference still?

hell that is not even the refreshed 8800. GPU wise there will be a HUGE difference.

The snag you may have is what is your cpu?

ie if you have an old AMD X2 or something along those lines you will simply go from a GPU bottleneck to a cpu bottle neck.

so long as your cpu is strong however i think it is well worth considering an upgrade.

an ATI 6950 flashable to 6970 would be a good shout, but if you are convinced that you prefer nvidia a 560Ti is well in your bracket, and a 570 not far out of it.

I think i read somewhere that the 560Ti like for like is roughly 3X the performance of the 8800GTS.

I personally chose to go for a 560Ti. it tends to overclock really well, i wanted physx for the few games which are supported, i prefer the nv drivers over ATI and decided the 570 was not worth the extra 60-70 quid for my needs.

Ok, I think I might pick up the GB OC model for under £200 and save myself some cash if it makes that much of a difference

I have an AMD Phenom 965 at stock 3.4GHZ which I plan to knock up to 3.6/3.8 in the near future as I already have an aftermarket cooler on there

I too have a 8800gts 640 and looking to upgrade.
I think I am going to get an ATI 6950 and possibly clock it. Though even at stock it is as good if not better than the 560 (use this comparison site http://www.anandtech.com/bench/GPU/88)
At the moment they are priced around the £200 - £230 mark. However on 8th March the new 6990 is out and I suspect the 6950 will drop further in price.

It would be nice to get a 6950 and unlock but i'm a plug and play kind of person and cant be arsed messing around and I read things about ATI drivers that put me off, nvidia drivers you just install them and leave them to it, thats how I like to roll

I'm going to get a sub £200 560 to fill the void before Keplar is released next year
