me buying 2 x 2GB PC2-6400 to replace my 2x1GB PC2-9200, would i notice a difference? i'm thinking something along the lines of a cheap 4GB set like the OCZ on TWO or the corsair stuff on this week only
I see a lot of questions like yours posted on this forum "Is it worth it?"
Really, if it was worth it you would probably know, a faster 2GB set of memory is always going to be . . . well faster than a slower 4GB set of memory if your not actually using over 2GB!
The turning point would be of course if you are a power-user/multimedia-creator/serious gamer that can actually load up more than 2GB of data into your system RAM at any one time . . . at the point you start regularly crossing 2GB you will see some slight pausing while the extra data is paged to the hard-disk (also called Disk-Thrashing) which isn't a show stopper by any means but is easily solved by adding more system RAM.
If you wanna take a peak at how your memory is coping then pop open Task-Manager and take a look at the performance tab . .
The bit I look at is the Commit Charge (k) section, I just took a screen grab now as I'm typing this post and you can see that
Total= 296MB of ram I am using now while posting
Peak= 357MB of memory is the most used at any time since my PC booted
I've yet to see my Peak memory usage hit 2GB, even while gaming so I'm not worried about disk thrashing or poor performance, keep an eye on that tab and you will probably find the answer to your original question!
apologies wayne for not thanking you for your helpful answer
just to ask a few more q's .. i'm considering the 4GB kingston set PC2-8500 on TWO.
i do play a fair amount of games like farcry 2 and like to run settings as high as possible, my question now is would it be worth the extra ~£10 to get the PC2-8500 over the PC2-6400 corsair or OCZ vista stuff?
Well Kingston are a respectable brand but personally I would pay the extra £14.95 for the OCZ set, consider it an investment and I'm sure they will be worth a good amount in a year or two when you come to upgrade . . .
