im currently running windows server 2003 but thinking of changing to a linux os. I have never used linux before, so easy setup is a must. I dont use most of the features of server, but need: remote desktop of some sort, file share, automatic / scripted backup, standby / wake on lan etc. is linux for me and what version would you suggest? Sorry for the messy post - on phone. Thanks.

Sounds like you'd be fine.

Instead of remote desktop you'd use ssh (a remote terminal rather than a remote desktop), which once you get the hang of it it's far easier/faster to use.

Fileshare can be done very easily with SAMBA (windows shares)

Automatic scripted backup, probably lots of (free) scripts out there that will do this, but haven't tried it myself

Ubuntu Server is probably a good place to start, that or just plain debian.

I've seen and used ubuntu briefly, though never installed it, and it's supposed to be straightforward, so I'll go with ubuntu server as a trial :)

I'm rebuilding my filerserver around a jetway MATX dual core atom board, so thought i'd take the opportunity to try something different. I've always been put off by installing things through command prompts (or equivalent term) etc which looks archaic. I've used DOS etc, but struggle to get around unless I know the commands (ipconfig, ping, formatting, bios flashing etc) or I have step by step instructions.

Anyway, I'll give it a go and report back :)

I think it would suit you fine.

I use exactly that.

Ubuntu Server with SSH and Webmin and your laughing :)

Cant post much now but some details on my setup can be found on simplegeek.

Edit: My server is Atom 330, Gigabyte ITX board, 2Gb Ram, 1.5Tb HD
