I have been trying to get my head around this but i am sure that MSi is taking us for a run for are money, the reason why i said that is because both the card looks the same but maybe there is more on the board that i would not be able to tell unless some has taken of the HSF.

I noticed that there have the same card on sale, What is the differents or is it just higher clock speed? Have they improved the components on the board???

MSI GeForce GTX 460 HAWK "Super-OC" 1024MB

MSI GeForce GTX 460 HAWK "Talon Attack" 1024MB

The Talon Attack version has a "cherry-picked" GPU chip, so overclock is more likely to hit above 950MHz, whereas the standard HAWK, the GPU chip is randomly pick, so whether you land a good overclock chip that will hit over 950MHz, or a poorer chip that would not go beyond 900MHz is purely depended on luck.

okay kool and thanks for the reply, so that is how they are making there money, now i guess we will soon be seening the 1Ghz cherry pick GPU, since they like to boast that you can get that, but i have never seen any that is that rating...

The 470 would seem to be the better deal if you're going to oc it..(afterall why pay the same price for a lesser card?). However I would imagine a fair amount of people pay extra for oc'd 460's as they may never have the intention to o'c & want an easy route. therefore they also wouldn't have any intention to o'c a stock 470 either....given this scenario, surely the talon would be a better buy than a stock 470 at the same price? The impression I'm getting is the talon seems to compete well with a stock 470 & I'd imagine still uses far less power/heat/noise. Talon = similar performance without the downsides? That's just my take on things so correct me if I'm wrong. Talon seems more tempting to me but then I don't like noise & ever increasing lecky bills.

The Talon Attack has a cherry picked GPU, and faster ram modules rated for 5000 Mhz.

However, tests and reviews that I have seen so far all show that the uncooled VRM chips still get far too hot and make the card incapable of clocking any higher than a Cyclone version.

With the Asus GTX 460 @ £149, and the MSI Cyclone @ £159, there is absolutely no point paying extra for the hawk cards because the GTX 460's design doesnt seem capable of handling much faster GPU and Ram clocks.

Also considering the GTX470 since it is the same price range as the 6870.

Out of the box at stock speed, the 6870 and the GTX470 are similiar in terms of speed, but:
GTX470 overclock much better (can overclock from 607MHz to 820-850MHz average, which put it at slightly faster than a stock GTX480), BUT it does consumption more power and is hotter, and the cooler can be loud, especially if your case has poor airflow.

The 6870 is well...consume less power, cooler running, but would only overclock to 950~975MHz average, which put it at around 5870 speed.

So which one to get is depending on your preference.

If your thinking of crossfire/sli the ATI is the way to go tho, all reviews ive seen seem to think the crossfire capabilities of the new 6xxx series are shockingly good. Personally id go with the new 6xxx series or wait till nov for the 69xx and see what there priced at.
