Is my 2700k an Engineering Sample?

I was just looking at the MSI Control Centre for my board when i noticed in the image here states my 2700k is an ES but in cpu-z it isnt down as an ES. So which is right? I tend to believe cpu-z but if anybody else has a similar setup as me it would be nice of them to check theirs too.. even if its a 2600 i'd appreciate it. I bought this chip as an OEM preordered so i suppose there is a chance of it being an ES or maybe MSI is just telling me porkys :p

Cheers :)

Note.. Ram speed is wrong.. i have DDR3-1600 so maybe MSI is reading stuff wrong.

I had this with a retail 3930K the other week. Core temp described it as ES CPU-Z did not. I know for a fact mine is not an ES and trust what CPU-Z says because its updated regularly.

If you do have an ES it will say on the physical chip - if you want to be absolutly sure. But if you brought the Chip retail or from a retailer then there is no chance that its and ES

Thanks Simon.. yea it was from a retailer but OEM and its just MSI telling me its an ES. Core Temp and cpu-z dont say this.

And no it doesnt say ES on the chip itself..

Thanks again :)

Pretty sure if the Chip is an engineering sample, it should have 'Intel confidential' stamped on the main chip on the top line :)

I've had a couple of ES chips in the past. The last one was an i7 950 - the description in the name field contained ES after the model name in CPU-Z - as described by SimonMaltby.

It all comes down to who's software is more reliable - CPU-Z is the defacto tool and regularly updated. I can't say the same for MSI. If you really want to be sure, then check the top of the chip, but if you bought it at a reputable retailer, and CPU-Z says it's not ES then I'd go with that.

I guess MSI Control Centre likes to tell me porkys on some stuff but its good for getting the base clock at 100.00 when it wants to give me 99.xx :p

No 'Intel confidential' on the chip. And btw ram is fine..

You can always check with "Intel® Processor Identification Utility"

http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/highlights/processors/toolspiu/

That will 100% tell you if it is an ES chip or Retail .

Thanks.. all looks good on that :)

Btw all.. I have the Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz CL8 i got from OCuK and was wondering if it will OC to 1866 easily (will i need to loosen the timings slightly?) and will i get much gain from it?

Still a bit of a noob with overclocking 1155 and only been on this platform since last Oct.. cheers :)

Yeah you're fine, cpu-z would've had (ES) in the namestring plus the actual heatspreader would've said Intel Confidential, few that i have had over the years did not even have the model name on them plus the code would've started with a 'Q' .
