Is my 6600 core 2 duo too hot (70c) ???

I bought an intel core 2 duo with the generic intel fan (stupid installation design!), I don't want to overclock or anything but my processor is running at around 70c and that's just in the bios. Everything seems to have clicked into place and the fan is definately spinning. Surely this is not a desirable operating temperature? My fan doesn't even feel hot? Could my mobo be telling me fibs or maybe the fan isn't making the connection with the processor (even though the processor has thermal paste on it from the fan??)

Help!!!

Thanks

Okay, 70C at idle is WAY too hot. You should be looking at keeping the processor core temp at under 70C, even at full load, overclocked and over-volted.

It's possible that the BIOS is reporting it wrong, but it's also equally possible that you've just got a very bad connection between the CPU and the heatsink. If that were the case, your heatsink/fan *wouldn't* be heating up much, as there is only a very poor conduit for the heat to escape from the CPU to the heatsink. It's all collecting in the CPU, hence the sky-high temperatures.

Take off the heatsink ASAP and check the 'footprint' (the mark left by the thermal compound as it bonds to the heatsink). If you have a digital camera, take a pic of the CPU as soon as you have taken off the heatsink and post it here - we'll tell you whether it's a good connection or not.

A roughly circular mark in the centre of the CPU, covering most of the area of the heatspreader. If it's much smaller than the heatspreader, or worse has empty spaces in it (cause by air bubbles), then you have a problem.

I take it you are using the pad thing that came with the CPU?

Yeah I am. Only the very edges weren't covered. And it was very much a circle, no gaps. After a re-boot it was down to 45c, I'll check if the fan is hot in a moment, I guess it will be a little warmer. What's the maximum tolerance of core 2 duo processors? As I remember Intel stuff always used to be hotter than AMD stuff!

Running at 48c after running Windows XP utilities. Reasonably warm now too, not hot though like CPU fans usually are. Also, I haven't got a floppy drive and have two 250GB SATAs to RAID together, will this be possible without getting my ABIT 3rd party RAID drivers from the floppy on boot?

Intel Prescotts ran hot, but Conroe is a pretty cool running chip, as its got a lower clock rate, much lower power consumption, and overall a better design.

Mine idles at around 34 degrees, and fully loaded on both cores, I can just about get it up to 58 after a couple of hours. Sits at around 46 degrees while playing most games(which arnt really optimized for dual core use, so generally only load one core at a time)

I use TAT to measure the temps, so thats the ondie measurement.

Sounds like you got it sorted there matey, those seem very realistic temps. Remember you shouldn't expect to get quite the low temps others are getting, as you're using the stock cooler and also the solid thermal pad as opposed to AS5.

What i always find frustrating with temps is that everyone gets their readings and therefore opinions based on different temperature sensors.

For example my bios will report around 40degs after being on for a many hours, and gigabyte easytune reports nearly the same. However speedfan seemed to give differing results, and even more so intel thermal analysis tool giving core temps for me at 58idle 64load.

Just helps if you state where you get the readings from.

My BIOS reports my E6600 running at 28-30, and EasyTune is the same, and core temp says my cores are about 40-41 idle. :)

mine was also giving high temps. i installed speed van and it seems to have made my reading more stable.. and if you look on the conroe forum at ocuk you'll see some fixes for problems.

but seriously recomend getting a good cooler, the stock ones are crappy

A lot of people are finding the Arctic Freezer 7 a good fan for the price.

Always use CoreTemp to tell you the real temperature of your conroe chips. Almost all other temps are taken off the mobo cpu socket and not off the chip itself therefore they are a good 10C lower then the real temperature.

For reference I have an Akasa 955 cooler with my E6300 oc'ed to 2.1Ghz and I am getting 44C after full load for the last 20 minutes.

Generally when I'm stress testing under prime I can push the temps up to 55C max in CoreTemp.

The arctic cooler is a great value, high quality cooler - much better than the stock fan. The scythe ninja would be a good choice if you're looking to spend a little more.
