Is My 8800GTX Dead? What to Replace It With?

Hi

I've had my 8800GTX from their release so it's done me good service.
However, I was playing New Vegas when the screen went black with sound until it crashed. (I've seen this issue before with drivers and Oblivion but never NV) I had to carry out a hard reset and was greeted with an error code for 'No VGA present' and the monitor remaining on STBY.
Im assuming my card has finally given up the ghost. I'll try and borrow a mates card to find out.

Is this a common death symptom for these cards? I've never killed one yet.

If it is dead can anyone recommend a replacement please.
i game at 1920x1200. the 8800GTX is showing limits on Metro 2033 etc but still looks good. Looking to spend no more than £200 really. I have just had an OCUK email offering 5% discount as I'd not bought anything for ages too!! Did they know!!

Thanks

Mike

Just pickup another 8800gtx for 35-40quid - best value for money bar none imo!

Im still using my 8800gtx which i bought on release week for around 400£ probs, and it still runs almost everything very well with a c2d

Thanks for links.

Anyone else suffered the same symptoms and found it to be the VGA?
It could have course be the PSU or MOBO which is why I ask.

No. My monitor remains on stby when i boot up accompanied by an error audio msg from mobo.
Artifacts and corruption would be a dream as i would have ordered a new card immedietely. A black screen could be one of many things and i havent got any spares to troubleshoot.

The Audio message would imply a system problem. Cross reference this with your motherboard manual or check www.bioscentral.com.

it may also be worth buying a cheap and really low end video card, something round the £10 mark just to get a video signal. It will help this time and any future dignostics.. Put out an ad in the wanted section :)

The audio msg tells me 'no VGA present' (as mentioned in the 1st post!)
Of course the power supply could have gone **** up or the mobo might be playing up.
Managed to source a crappy card from a mate to start diagnosing tomorrow.

I was hoping a throng of people would all say that all 8800GTX's shuffle of their silicone coil with a BSOD........
Alas, things are never that simple:rolleyes:

It could be your memory, I would test that first by removing 1 stick (assuming you have 2 or more sticks) and do it via trial and error.

Just slotted in an ancient card and prob solved.
Of course it could be the PSU? However it's time to get a new card so I might try a refurb 570GTX.

8800GTX is dead
Long live the king

Best bang for buck card I've ever had.

Oh i wish it had been as easy as a new card!
My replacent card, a 570GTX arrived so i cleaned out the driver and fitted it along with 280.26. Just for confidence i ran 3dmark06 a few times with no issue. I then fired up New Vegas for a session and within a minute i had a bsod, soundloop then it rebooted. Unlike the 8800 i had no POST errors and windows booted up fine.
Ive since rolled the driver back to an earlier one. And changed the psu for a new one.
New vegas is still causing a bsod but i can happily play Metro2033 and BFBC without issue and higher details etc.
Im left wondering if New Vegas is corrupt (tryed earlier saves) or the mobo has s pci-e issue?
Also can a gfx hardware failure cause software corruptions?
Im going to try more games to test stability.
I hate these instability problems. They end up costing a fortune....

Out of curiousity...since you got a P5Q board, why are you only having the Q6600 overclocked to a mere 3.0GHz? It should go 3.6GHz no problem, as long as you got a good CPU cooler.

My 6600 remains at 3 as it was bought here as a guarenteed 3gig o/c. Im trying to rule out system instability by keeping it low.
If some newer games play without issue ill clock it up to get more from the graffy card:)

New Vegas is on steam. I know from experience Oblivion and Fall Out can and do cause horrendous crashes. Normally they can be traced to a problem in the system which is what worries me. The previous 8800gtx was rock steady and NV had'nt once crashed.

I could if need be pick up a 2nd had p5q but then when at this stage you have to consider a new mobo/cpu instead of flogging aging components??

Maybe i should clock the nuts off it for its swansong;)

I'd say just get a cheap 9600 or 9800, then wait for the new Nvidia/AMD cards to come out.

It's sad when the mighty 8800GTX dies, I had mine from release.
I miss BFG, they had an amazing warranty policy as well.
