I can't see alcohol damaging the chip. Did you knock one of the capacitors on the bottom of the chip?

I made sure I only touched the heatspreader. Did not touch anything else.
Maybe it was the type of cloth I used and generated static electricity?

EDIT: By the way, got myself an E6550 now

Maybe something got zapped, who knows? I never take my CPU out when I'm cleaning it, I leave it in there and gently clean it so I don't bow the board and get alcohol everywhere!

I must say I have never ever had any issues with static..never worn a wrist strap either. I just clean my CPUs with IPA (not the beer ) and all fine. Unlucky matey.

me too, i clean my cpu while its in the motherboard. the Akasa AK-TC TIM Clean CPU & Heatsink Cleaner is a great cpu cleaner
