is my dvd/cd drive dead?

well.. i was writing cd and suddenly it crashed and had to restart for it to open..then i try to play a dvd on it and its ok but when i got for a cd(audio i have tried) it doesnt even read it like nothing is in it

buy a new cd/dvd-rw drive?

whats the model ? could try flashing the firmware but sounds fubar'd to be honest.

Seen that before, where a DVD/CD combo drive would refuse CD's yet still play DVD's.

Funny thing is the first time I saw it, was a Dell computer, and Dell support tried really hard to refuse to believe it, insisting I should reinstall windows... Real smart considering I had already told them that the DVD drive was unable to read CDs! (windows cd anyone?)
