I'm really confused cos Cpu-z says my E6600 is running at 1.6 ghz in core speed. I thought it should be 2.4ghz.. am i missing something here?

Wtf? the multiplier is on 6x shouldnt it be 9x??

I just flashed to the latest bios for the Asus p5w dh, 1101.

sounds like speedstep or whatever its called, underclocks the CPU when idle etc and then when your doing something demanding it clocks it up, disable it in BIOS

Speedstep is disabled in the bios. And the bios says the cpu is @ 2400mhz
fsb - 1066mhz
ratio actaul value - 9
cpu freq - 266
dram freq - ddr2 800mhz.

I had this problem, what bios rev are you using? I reverted back to 0801 from 0901 and that resolved it for me. It's working fine for me with bio rev 1101 as well.

And there's still a problem in 1101? Is it as 1602Mhz constantly? Mine used to fluctuate between the correct speed and and the incorrect one, does the multiplier switch between 6 & 9 as well?

Im gonna install the latest version of sandra and see what that says.

Sysytem properties says 2.4ghz.

More or less stays at 1602.8/7 mhz must be a bug?

I hadnt any real problems with 0701 I think i might flash back.

I could be wrong but I don't think disabling Speedstep is enough cos the CPU has an additional tech that lowers the clock when in idle. That looks normal to me.

Spot on mate. I just ran super pi 1m and it went back to 2.4ghz and 9x multi. There must be something in the bios?

Think the name is C1E, 'enhanced halt state', not even sure it can be disabled in the BIOS but I don't have a Conroe, just been reading about peoples troubles :p

Well i solved it. It wasnt CE1 as that was disabled. It was CPU internal thermal control...

If option was set to Auto Bios would automaticly check Cpu's capability to enable TM or TM2 support. In TM mode Cpu power consumption would be reduced. In TM2 mode Cpu core ratio and VID would be reduced.

I disabled it and now Im back to normal. This wouldnt stop my cpu from burning out if disabled would it?

Pleased you solved that one.
There are a few things about the way Conroe is reported back under some applications.
I'm running a 6400 at 3Ghz.

If I go Control Panel>System my "Computer" is listed as:

Intel®Core(TM)2 CPU
6600 @ 2.4Ghz
3.00Ghz, 2.00 GB of RAM
Physical Address Extension

So the @ 2.4Ghz is actually part of the chip identificatio string rather than the actual running speed of the CPU which appears on the next line down along side the amount of system RAM.

Dear god, the amount of posts we get on this.

It is speedstep. Nothing to worry about.

Load something CPU intensive and CPU-Z will show the full clocks.

End of thread :)
