I have a 500gb Samsung sata hard drive which I got in 2009 or 2010 which has windows 10 installed on it and if I am lucky It will load windows work for a bit then crash and when I reboot and go into bios it does not see the hard drive.

The bios sees my other hard drives fine so I tried the cable and the sata socket on the motherboard from a different hard drive and the bios will still only see the hard drive if I am lucky. And the cable that was plugged into the maybe faulty hard drive then plugged into the good drive and it is fine so all cables are fine.

So is my old hard drive almost dead?

Do you have any files you want to keep from it? Does the drive feel too hot anywhere?

I've used the freezer trick in the past, but more in desperation and a last ditch attempt before I gave up. I would put the drive in an airtight bag and in something like a Tupperware box - then put the box in the freezer for a few hours - I vaguely remember 2 was enough for me, but I was impatient at this point. :D

While in the freezer, setup some fans to aim at the harddrive - the more airflow the better. As soon as I took the drive from the freezer and bag, I connected the cables up and turned the fans on before praying.

Maybe I got lucky and my drive just needed a rest. Maybe the freezer trick played a part in helping me rescue my data - who knows? But when you have nothing to lose, give it a go.

Well today it is working so have run Hard Disk Sentinel and Crystal Disk Info and they report 71 bad sectors and Hard Disk Sentinel reports estimated remaining lifespan 41 days.
