Is my neighbour being an idiot about noise from my flat?

Sorry for the lengthy post.

I have recently moved into a new appt, and downstairs lives a lone gentleman.

He threw a very loud party where he was DJ'ing as few weeks back. As the night wore on it started to grind on us, and as my fiancee is expecting and due to give birth soon I went down to have a word about the noise.

The party was him and 30 gyrating women who work at his shoe shops where he is a bigwig at. There were no other men apart from me there. Anyway I stayed for a couple of beers and left, but the noise didn't really abate.

Anyways, now he is starting to complain about the noise coming from my new stereo. He wrote me a letter the other week, which I replied to.

In my reply I mentioned his loud party and the fact that we never play loud music after 10pm, but as we wan't to get along and be neighbourly we should meet and find an acceptable limit, so that we can play music and it doesn't disturb him.

He knocked on yesterday when I was playing music and said it was absolutely deafening in his flat below. I went down there with im to investigate and literally I could just about hear the bass, but to describe it as intrusive or overly loud would be ridiculous. He had an app on his phone to measure decibels and basically at most the noise from about was around 20-30 decibels, which is akin to the sound of someone whispering in from 3 inches away. He insists that this is unacceptable, but I insist that as the loudest sound coming from out flat that would be absolutely within reasonable limits.

I also told him that from a legal perspective we are doing nothing wrong, but he can always send me a text if he is finding the music annoying and I will turn it right down/off. What should I do if he keeps on complaining? I had my ears tested recently and the doctor said my hearing is excellent so it can't be that I am deaf.

If you really are doing nothing wrong then ignore him.
Sounds like he took exception to you going around there at the party.

Ask him if his iPhone has been calibrated for sound levels + make at least one shoe joke/pun every time he is unreasonable.

YNBU ;)

I'd say just stick to playing at reasonable times and respect the neighbour's wishes. Perhaps turn your bass down if that's the only thing. Or indeed move your speakers.

You could invest in some nice headphones as well then there'd be absolutely nothing to worry about :)

Man there is no way on earth I am buying headphones! To be fair if he wanted absolute silence at all times he should have bought a house.

There's a twonk lives above a mate of mine. We used to have occasional LAN parties at his place. Needless to say we kept unsocable hours but we all used headsets and rarely shouted (a good ding round the lug being much more effective) but he would thump on the floor at every opportunity, even if we TALKED too loud!

Fast forward a year or so and he has discovered the joys of surround sound movies! We can clearly hear what movie is is watching by the racket coming through the ceiling. We were even kept awake late at night as he had obviously dozed off and the disc menu was playing over and over. I was all for battering down his door but my mate has to live with the guy I guess. I just couldn't get over the cheeky bugger making far more noise than we ever did, after all his bloody complaining. :(

Broomstick and hit the ceiling. Reverse the complaining!

With a newborn on it's way, your stereo is going to be the least of your neighbour's worries! :)

So long as you're being reasonable I see no reason to do anything other than ignore him. He's just being petty because you questioned him in front of his wimmin.

Hahaha :D

When I went to his party it was really strange! He definately swings the other way otherwise I would have said luckly please fully star swearing!!

We have an old guy downstairs that actually complains about noise coming from the flat above us, to us. As if we don't have to put up with it as well, but it's not late at night or anything so I'm not massively fussed.

Some people just have nothing better to do.

Trust me, people are petty. Neighbors are easy to tick off, and then become unreasonable.

As previously mentioned, he probably took exception to you complaining about noise, and is now being a pedantic twit about the whole thing, thinking any noise from you is hypocritical and unacceptable.

He might even think what your music sounds like, is what his party sounded like, and so if you have the right to complain why doesn't he then?
just ignore him and get on with your life, as long as you don't have excessively loud music late in the evening there's nothing that anyone will do about it.

If it was late I would understand, but he came knocking yesterday at 18:30 just after we had eaten and were chilling on the sofa!
