Hey all,

Just overclocked my i7 950 to 4ghz. Its stable on prime for an hour no problems (its all i tested for) and stable for gaming for 3-4 days, few hours each time. Idle temps when just internet browsing are around 44c, gaming is around 65c and prime settles at around 84c. Does that sound about right?

Me spec is as follows:

Asus P6X58D-E
i7 950
HX 850w PSU
MSi 580GTX
Xigmatek Dark knight cooler

The overclocking settings are as follows:

CPU Volt - 1.2000
CPU Ratio - 21
BCLK Freq - 191
CPU Pll - 1.88
DRAM Core Volt - 1.3500
DRAM Bus Volt - 1.65
DDR3 Speed - 1531Mhz
Speedstep - Enabled

if its stable its a good oc regarding cpu voltage, test with 10 runs on high with intel burn test,if it passes that then you can say its pretty stable,no more than ten runs though as its very stressful, and dont let core temps go above 80c imo but 84c for very very short spikes is ok

Games will run a lot lower than prime/ibt etc. I see a max of 77c under ibt, 64c max with bf3.

Just done the intel burn test on high with 10 runs. It did it fine, but did hit 89c on 1 of the cores for a second. Looking at getting a new CPU cooler, quite like the new Frio.

I got the h80 today it's great really took all my temps down a good 15-20c extremely easy to install and looks great, I cant recommend it more.

You have two fans in push/pull? Using good quality thermal paste like tuniq tx or mx2? I have thermolab baram heatsink and two fans

I have a fan sucking in air at the front of my case, 1 fan on the CPU heatsink facing the back of my case and a fan also at the back acting as an exhaust. The fan on the CPU cooler is pretty slow and quiet, could do with a better fan really.

Id stick a high speed PWM fan such as an akasa viper on the cooler. Got two of them in push/pull on a prolimatech super mega. Not the prettiest fan tbh, but superb cooling.

You need two fans either side of your heatsink in push/pull, a single fan won't be enough, even on a top quality heatsink

Temps aren't too bad, as suggested above probably could do with an additional case fan or go to a push/pull config. That's a good vcore for 4GHz too. My i7 920 @4.0 peaks at 72c during IBT with Thermalright Silver and a Fractal R3 which is a pretty poor air cooling case, so adding a couple of fans to your setup should help.
