I recently upgraded to an 8800gts 640mb. I have been playing Bioshock and other games with no problems, however when I try and play any steam based games it will lock up after a minute or so. I'm thinking it could be a problem with my power supply, as I know steam is very intensive on the cpu, therefore stresses it a lot more than games like bioshock which rely more on the graphics card.
I've tried different sets of drivers and nothing seems to fix the problem. I've also run memtest for 7 hours, and its nothing to do with my ram.

specs:
Windows XP Home
Amd X2 4600+
Asus A8n-E
2gb Ram (pc3200)
HEC 550w (18a one one rail 17a on the other)

cheers

Hard to say, what driver are you using and have you run Orthos to stress the CPU?

If Orthos is stable and you still crash in Steam based games it could be Steam itself.

I'm using the 163.71 drivers at the moment, and yeah orthos is running stable. When I had my processor overclocked I would get loads of jagged shapes flash up all over the screen in game before freezing. I'm running at stock now, and it just freezes

How long can you play Bioshock for without problems?
Did this only just start happening with new drivers, or has it always been present?

It's strange really, have you tried running 3DMark 06 in a loop? That shouls shed some more light on the situation.

I can run bioshock for hours, same with 3dmark. It looks like it could be some kind of bug with steam after all, as I put in my old 6800 and i get the same problem.
