Is my RAM limiting my overclock??

Hey, i have been overclocking my Q8300 recently and trying to get as much as i can out of it. I have got it to around 3.1GHz stable and any further and it crashes. I have just been increasing the FSB and the Voltages to get this overclock. The FSB is at 410 and the voltage is around 1.40.

I have 5G of PC - 5400 DDR2. Is this not allowing me to overclock any further???

Also not sure what to set the DRAM Freq or FSB to north bridge strap to.. As i know when increasing the FSB it increases the RAM speed also. Can i set the RAM at a certain speed and just increase the CPU speed??? Sorry not experienced in overclocking:(

I have an ASUS P5QL Pro mb

Thanks in advance :)

What ratio do you have the FSB-DRAM set to?
Yes you would be right in saying FSB affects CPU Internal Clock, however in most cases a motherboard Jumper allows you to set the CPU clock via the FSB without affecting your memory FSB.

This can sometimes result in a bottleneck, but if a higher CPU clock is what your after, then it does the trick.

You should refer to your manual, or motherboards manufacturer website for information on OC Jumpers etc, (sorry, I can't be bothered to look myself haha :P )

If you can manage to keep your CPU FSB to 1333MT/s using a 1333:667MT/s Ratio you should be able to get the memory upto around 720MT/s assuming your RAM can take it.

The reason i'm using terms in "MT/s" is because it's not the same as MHz, read up on it...)

I would say if you want to really overclock a little more, go for higher memory setup, such as PC6400 or PC8500 which would be much more ideal, and would increase so much more performance.

I'm no expert in overclocking, but I hope that info there helps.

I have just been playing around an set the FSB to 415, FSB strap to NB to 400GHz and left DRAM freq at Auto and i have got it stable.

Not even sure if this is the correct way but it seems to be stable with Prime95.

It would remove the bottlenecking caused by the higher CPU FSB to Lower RAM FSB, which would greatly increase performance.

Theoretically you would be able to overclock higher, because PC8500 can physically go higher frequencies than 5400.
Although there wouldn't be much OC Difference, from PC8500 - PC5400 the performance increase would be huge.

However, if you were to set PC8500 memory, to something like 800MT/s rather than 1066MT/s and then overclock, bringing the PC8500 memory to it's 1066 stock speed the FSB multiplier, (not sure what it is in your system) would greatly increase your core clock.
Then you could even go further, by OC your memory past 1066 increasing the core clock of your CPU even further.

sorry if I didn't explaint that very well, but I would seriously invest in some PC8500 memory, something like corsair dominator and a fan which is great for overclocking.
