Is my Sky Box Knackered?

I have normal Sky, had the same box for about 3 1/2 years, a while ago it decided that on a lot of channels (most of my favourites) that "No Satelite Signal is being received".

I done a full reset, it has updated to the new Guide thing and channels that are available are fine.

The EPG, favourites and planner all work fine.

I rang sky and they want to charge £65 for sending an engineer out to "fix" the problem, checking the system setup reveals no problem (signal strength / lock all ok).

What are my options? A friend said it could be the LNB, but I don't know which one i should replace it with if I do. Should I get a new box off the bay?

The box I have now is a Grundig (that's all I can see on it).

Suggestions please.

Thanks

Thanks Lostkat, thought I was in HC&H.

I did a search, and found your thread cyKey, but I have different symptoms. I guess the answer is probably the same tho.

Its the box. I had a crappy old Grundig which kept doing the same thing and we had the LNB replaced initially but it did nothing. Replace it with a nice panasonic one, they are the best according to the engineer. I have got 2 now and they are fast and smooth!

I have a box you can have for free if you arrange the postage. its a Panasonic.I dont need it any more as i have moved to Telewest and its gathering dust in my attic. You can have the dish as well but you will have to remove it yourself lol its on my tv pole. pm me if you are interested

Will find out how much it costs to post down to winch and let you know.
Cheers

EDIT: Dancake, we cannot Pm, and you have no trust yet so I can't get a mail address for you. Can you mail me (my username) @F2s.com

Cheers

It is likely to be the PSU in the Grundig box or the LNB.

Sounds like it has problems switching between H and V polarisation which could be either box or lnb.

Just give sky a call, threatern to cancel and they will offer you a free service call. This means the installer will come out and fix the problem.

They rather have your future revenue then loose it over a single £65 fee.

The cheap capacitors in the PSU are probably gone then - You can fix 'em yourself (<£10), have them fixed (<£20) or buy an ebay box (£40).

I tried that and they wouldn't do any better than offer me service call for £30 so I cancelled and now have NTL cable, much better IMHO.
