Is now the best time to sell your GPU?

I was lucky enough to buy an RX 6800 at launch from OCUK. I paid £599 for it. It has made about £200 mining in about 5 months. I bought it to game with no idea mining was profitable at the time but it has spent 95% of the time I have owned it mining and not gaming.

I have been reading that etherium is not going to be profitable by the end of the year so I have the potential to make another £300 in the time before then. I have discovered that I could take my 6800 down to CEX and get £920 cash for it which would be an instant £320 profit. This feels like too good an opportunity to pass up as I can't see prices rising much higher than that. Or could they?

So it seems that my options are keep the GPU and continue mining which will at best net me £300 before etherium isn't mineable anymore and I still have a GPU which will no longer be worth as much or wait until I can get an Xbox Series X and sell the GPU for £320 profit.

What would you do?

If you don't actually game and mainly use this for making money, then sure cash in.
But if you need a GPU to game, Id hang on to it. Esp as you have already reduced the cards cost to £399.

If you do go with trading it in, its a smooth process. Went through the same with them recently. Very happy.

wow £858 guaranteed cash from cex for my 3070 founders. not gonna lie that does sound tempting but i can't be without a gpu so it's a non starter for me.

Yeah I've been looking at this as well, I'm away with work a lot at the mo so no gaming for me, so my 3060Ti is mining at the mo, given what I sold my previous card for, and what the 3060Ti has mined its all bought and paid for already, so, do I let CEX have it and pocket the money until the 3080Ti comes out, but then I run the risk of not being able to get a card again....

I wouldnt sell till you have the new card in-hand.

Just looked at what CEX pay more for a 1080Ti than a Titan Xp (2017) and both are far lower than EB prices even before this latest crazy time, lucky I sold both the before mentioned cards in March after buying a 3090FE in Jan so basically paid for it.

CEX is a place I would never be in or deal with TBH.

I'm curious how does an outfit like that test them? Do they have a setup in store (seems unlikely) or do you have to post it to them?

Jeez! Did they have the cash on hand to give you? How did the process of selling them it go?

Bank transfer only which is fine I'd prefer that than cash. They took it in gave me a receipt, tested it and then confirmed I would be paid and it took a couple days.

They even didn't mind all the dust it accumulated from the 24/7 mining it did since Feb aside from the occasional gaming.

On the hunt for a Series X or maybe consider trying a 6800XT now.

I just sold my 3080FE to CEX for £1445
I did the same! Paid for the 3090 and bit more.

Yes they have test bench in each store. From what I heard the staff saying, they just check it boots to windows. Does not sound like the stress test it.

They paid me the next day. Crazy thing is the card was sold for £1700 within 2 days!!

It's interesting how the 6800XT only gets £1080, think the price might be related to mining performance.

I wouldn't sell till you have the new card in hand.

Yeah, I mean, I'm away most of this month, and most of next so won't be gaming, so it can sit at home mining, but then will prices go down once the newer 3070 and 3080 Ti cards come out, its more a case of me keeping the money and not chucking it into crypto or shares at the mo, or, god forbid the missus finds out and 'needs' something new and shiny...

It's nice knowing I've got the money and I can afford to buy what I like, Series X, 3090, 6800, 6900 etc..

But of course, if I could actually get hold of any of those I'd not actually have got 1445 for the 3080 :p

The main factor for me is I can still game because I have my laptop with a 2070 Max-Q, but when I move to new place and my 4k OLED is set up, the laptop will end up screaming.

It will be a while before the newer cards are easily available. Plus if they nerf them for mining the older cards will still hold value.

Series S is easily available, if you don't mind all digital.
