Is overclocking over?

I notice that it would appear that Kaby lake is simply just overclocked skylake.
Reducing the overclocking headroom on kaby lake itself.

Pascal cards are overclocked out of the box, judging by the lower overclock % achievable compared to maxwell.

Is this a trend? You used to be able to get huge overclocks from CPUs and GPUs. Is consumer overclocking done for?

I think part of the issue is that earlier chips ran very hot and very power hungry the old i7 920 was only clocked at 2.67ghz I think it was though it would easily do over 4ghz+ if overclocked. The downside of course was the huge amount of heat it chucked out I had to leave the window open behind it to let the heat escape during the summer.

Now that they're much more power efficient they can afford to push them much closer to their limits. The only thing holding it back was the power draw and it was a lot of wasted potential. Enthusiasts could draw that potential out but for mainstream users it was a waste from Intel's point of view.

As to why they're not pushing for faster silicon at a higher wattages, well thats another issue entirely I guess.

Still getting by with a £30 dual core chip I unlocked to quad and overclocked by 50% (24/7, up to 57% pushing my RAM voltage higher than I prefer to keep it).

With 4c16t and 6c12t Ryzen being locked 8c16t die, I'm interested to see whether unlocking cores will make a comeback.

That would be nice if it was possible, wouldn't it? An 8c16t chip, clocked highly, for about the same price (if rumours are to be believed) as an unlocked i3?

I also got 2 cores unlocked with my AMD Phenom ii 550 be :D

There is always going to be some headroom to account for the variation in production quality over different batches, etc. (even with today's more refined processes and more experienced engineers) which would allow for some overclocking potential.
