Seems a few poeple are arguing that overclocking PC hardware is now less relevant to people and people are no longer interested in RAW speed

I'll have to choose both.

I take it that this thread isn't aimed at anyone in particular....? ;)

I would have to say 1, I don't think the energy usage has any impact for the length of time my PC is on.

Voted for 2. but would say that what I actually look for is the best overclock I can get that still keeps things cool & quiet (which also usually equates to reasnoble economy).
I do not consider that nos.1 & 2 are mutually exclusive

3:Whats overclocking?

4: Best value for money, as much speed as possible for as cheap as possible, don't waste money on expensive mainboards or ram or silly water cooling for example but the best bang for buck overclock.

Aside from on laptops or htpc's, I really don't understand answer 2. I mean ''energy saving'' ? Come on... You're rich enough to pay your elec bill, don't be a cheapskate or hippy... The last thing in the world I will be saving on will be energy, as it is now, I want as much power as possible, an as big screen as possible, the biggest loudest speakers, the fastest cpu for the cash regardless of the heat the thing emits or the power it eats, hell, even with other things: An as large car as I can afford with an as powerful engine as possible.

I CAN understand wanting silence though, but energy saving? No.

2 for me now with my i5 rig. Any performance increase from overclocking is little more than a placebo, in real use I struggle to appreciate any difference. Noise however is important, and noise, heat and power consumption go hand in hand.
