Option 3 is for me. My E2160 is dead slow at stock so I have it on LESS than stock volts (so it's using less power than it does on stock) at 3.0ghz which makes a snail of a CPU very speedy, with almost no energy/heat increase!

I'll pretend to say that I run my CPU at moderate clocks to save face...As I'm no expert.

But what I will do is stick a huge big **** off GFX card in to make it up.

With the blinkered vision..I'm saving power and being smart.

Still relevant for me, still consider myself pretty new at it, but i like to eek as much as i can from my kit.
 
Bugger a tiny increase on my leccy bill, bugger my carbon footprint and bugger you Government sympathisers that'll be wanting to tax me by the Ghz (it's just a green tax you understand...).
I'll squeeze what I can from my chip. Green fascists will be telling us we can't use the accelerator pedal in the car next (while they jet to green summits) for exactly the same reason it is being suggested we shouldn't oc. :mad:
 
My next goal is to eek 4.2ghz out of this i7, thats probably the realistic limit on good air cooling, my highest temp on any core is 76c, other 3 at 70-72c, my current pwm fans are a bit crap (only 400-1200 rpm) When i get my new case (lian li a70fb) im thinking of going water cooled. I remember when i had my q6600, wouldnt go over 3.0ghz on my 680i board, that board died (thankfully), got a p5q deluxe, 3.6ghz came fairly easy on 1.4vcore, but i wanted more, lapped the cpu and my TRUE black to 2000 grit grade, whacked a pair of 2000 rpm fans on the coler (3 more in the case) took that cpu to 3.8ghz on load temps below 70c.
 
Personally i wouldnt lap my i7 yet, in the case of my q6600 id had it for quite a while and wasnt bothered about warranty. It actually didnt detract from it's resale value though. Stuck it on MM and it was sold in 10 minutes, sold quickly as it was a proven clocking chip.
 
I'm not that worried about warranty when i had my q9550 i lapped it the day i got it just want to get the most out of it even if that means destroying the warranty crazy i know but if it fails I'll just buy a new one. My temps currently hit mid 70's so im thinking about it :D
 
Didnt bother lapping my q9550 either, it was such a cool running chip anyway, nice low vid of 1.200, done 3.8ghz on 1.216 vcore, highest temp in ibt was 55c, should have kept it and pushed for 4ghz, but i got lazy and sold it to fund my i7, i7 is currently at 4ghz, hoping to go a bit higher
 
I always seem to end up with a rubbish chip that will require more voltage than what others use mine is @ 1.388v for 4.1Ghz and now im trying to go further but i think im at my cooling limit with the H50 that's why im moving to a custom water setup
 
Ive been pretty lucky with the intel chips ive got so far, most clocked very well and ran cool on good air cooling. Though im considering the custom watercooled route on my current i7, im geting a new lian i a70fb full tower case to replace my current akasa eclipse 62, this will give me a good choice of air or water, i loked at the corsair 800d, great for watercooling, not ideal for air cooling.
 
My option is for a balance.

When I first get my new hardware i'll overclock the nads off it to see how fast it will go, run some synthetics and clock some fps to show the world.

Once i've done that, for day to day use.

i'll overclock to my highest stable overclock without changing any voltages.

works well for me :)
 
BUMP!

I voted for YES, although my PC is overclocked quite a bit AND also very very quiet with CPu and intake fans below 700rom and exhaust fan at 1100 (quiet though).

Only an ambient hum comes from my case \m/ it's so quiet you can get a peaceful night's sleep.

Q9550 @ 3.7 (463x8) 1.25vcore (Ultra120) @ 37 degrees idle (55 all cores loaded)

Option 3 for me but tbh i do like to overclock to the max at 1st just to see what my hardware will do , but then after that drop it bk down to stable quiet speeds to run 24/7
 
I doubt this site will give you a completely unbiased view on the subject but then i would guess most people would like to get something extra for less so option 3 for me. Although i couldn't see say my parents thinking they can get an extra 10% etc out of their pc!
