Is password-find.com any good?

I have a word document I need to gain access too. A disgruntled former employee thought it would be funny to password protect one of our clients files.

There are obviously dozens of software solutions which I've looked into and can take days, even weeks to finish on a fast PC left on 24/7. One of the cloud based solutions is password-find.com. But I'm dubious. I don't want me/the company to pay out $40 on something which won't work. They promise it will be cracked within 24 hours or your money back, which sounds great.

Anyone heard of this site? Or know of a solution which can help? It's a .docx file.
 
Not enough evidence. It's one of those "hunches" where you know he locked the file but can't prove it. We don't access the document often, maybe every 3 days. But it's odd that after he leaves we can't gain access.

I know how my company will work, will write the file off and ask us minions to re-do it. It's confidential so I cant say what's in it exactly. But suffice it to say it's a large file with literally weeks of work to put back. I have discussed how to prevent this in the future, but after the horse has bolted and all that.

I'm tempted just to take a punt on this site and see what happens, but I've looked into their twitter, hardly any activity and their facebook, 4 likes.
 
I take it now is not a good idea to talk about backups?? :)

Cant help on the site but it doesn't scream were gonna take your money and run but if your worried about confidentiality then your best route would be what Pike suggests if viable
 
If it's nothing important i'm happy to crack it for you, i use elcomsoft and it's always provided great results. Obviously the only limiting factor being the strength of the password and any info you know about what it may be.
 
The file is stored on one of our network drives. We tried this method for a shift rota which was modified and saved. Didn't work. Repairing that was easy, just an excel table. This however..

When things like this happen it does make you wonder how some companies stay alive. But on the other hand, since this protected file has cost us time and makes us look silly to our clients, management will now get group IT to sort this issue out.

As for this site, I am truly tempted and I agree it doesn't scream thieves but still.

Might be an idea, the only issue is, will this reveal the password? My colluege today spotted another file, not as important but still, which we can't open. Will "cracking" it give us the password he used in case we find other files further along? Or is cracking each one the only viable option?
I am liaising with my boss as I speak.

A long shot but sometimes there are ghost temp files left behind after you open and edit a word document. Have a look in the folder (show hidden files) and see if there is a hidden temp file of the same name. I have had some success copying these temp files to a different folder and them opening them up in Word. It is really a long shot though, but will take a minute to see.

Your trust? Sorry, I don't understand.
I managed to get a few files which are locked. Since one of the main files is confidential, I can send you a minor file, hopefully the password revealed there will help with the others.
 
Click the little trust button in the corner of my post, and send me an email so i can give you mine and send them over, or host them alternatively and send me the link.
 
Is the file on a server and is the server backed up? Could you not restore from a backup? Hopefully you will get the file pre password. I know the chance of that is slim.
 
Not sure if it's the same with Word docs, but Excel documents can be cracked simply by opening them in 7-zip/WinRAR & replace the correct files. Long time since I've done that, but it works :)

Out of curiosity I have just tried that and it does not work with 2007 Office. What method did you use.
 
Just had a quick look, maybe I was thinking of when somebody just protects a worksheet against editing. To remove edit/sheet protection all you need to do is remove any reference to 'password' in the sheetx.xml file using 7zip.

When you enter a password in the save as dialog it seems to encrypt the whole file.
