Is Plex still a thing?

My Plex Server runs on my gaming and work PC, decided it was cheaper to have one machine do everything than different ones for different jobs. 8 core/16 thread and 64Gb Ram means it hasn't struggled with anything I have tried.

Currently using a QNAP NAS with around 108TB of useable storage currently with 2 disk redundancy (RAID 6) - have 4 more 3.5 slots I can use, and 6 2.5 Slots (plus 2 NVME) in the unit to use. I will likely bite the bullet and buy an expansion chassis as well as the NAS itself has a fair wack of compute so will last long term.

Plex itself runs on a Lenovo micro pc on Ubuntu - it was running on a LXC container on proxmox but honestly I found it more hassle than it was worth and Plex is my primary application so it gets its own dedicated box.
What model QNAP please? Sounds like a beast!

I also still use Plex, I don't bother with transcode anymore as internet is so fast now not a problem for me 99% of the time.

Side note, what client devices does everyone use? I have a good old Nvidia Shield and it's still somehow (I think) the only device that will do everything? I love using the built in Samsung app when I can as don't need to deal with the sometimes iffy refresh rate switching HDMI shenanigans, but have to use the Shield for TrueHD/DTS MA content which is annoying.

I really hope we get a Shield 2 with the Switch 2 incoming, but rather doubt it!

That's not all transcoding is for though.

Apple TV. Tried an Nvidia shield but it was a glitchy mess a lot of the time so I got rid of it.
Fair enough, just a scenario I never seem to hit anymore.

ATV, still only LPCM right? Does Plex work with QMS? I wish you could just pay for a DTS/TrueHD licence or whatever so TV eARC would do it from native apps, could tidy things up and also use AV1 for video now.

I use Infuse for films - https://support.firecore.com/hc/en-us/articles/217735707-Audio-Options-Capabilities

The regular Plex app for TV shows. 90% of the time I'm wearing AirPod's to not wake the spawn.

I prefer Jellyfin it's good enough for what I want, big factor it's free as I like the fact I don't have to pay to watch my own films.
Plex is also free, you don't have to pay to watch anything.

If you want more advanced features such as hardware transcoding, that requires Plex Pass, where with Jellyfin that part is free.

I believe you have to pay for devices like Tablets or has this changed now?

If you use the Plex app on an iPad as an example, I believe there's a $5 activation fee. You can however use other apps to connect to Plex and it used to work via web browser (no idea if it still does).

I paid for premium a long time ago and used to use it a lot but nowadays my wife/kid use my server a lot more. I usually use Netflix/YouTube/etc more.

What are you running on your server our are you just using DLNA?

The last time I updated it was a while ago and I used a i5-8400 running on unraid. The intel is good enough to transcode 4k HDR streams but 99% of playback is local so there is no trancoding being done. The only time trancoding is use is when I'm away from home.

So you're still using Plex.
I still don't the odd video that transcodes even when it could and indeed does direct play when I force it to.
Obviously subtitles require it as well.

Now i could be wrong but I'm sure the devices running windows also use direct play with subtitles when streaming from the plex server.

Might give it a go next year, I do use transcoding for older devices. Jellyfin has it's minor issues like it's interface is slow if it's not been installed on a SSD. And it doesn't have a installer package for a off the shelf NAS it has to be done through Docker.

When I tried it on my NAS I just clicked install Jellyfin same as with Plex.

Why not just run it in docker? My Plex server (and many other apps) all run in docker behind traefik and it works perfectly.
