Is PSN under attack? - PSN now back up 15/05

It's not really free though. You have to buy the console and the games to access it, they're not providing the service out of the goodness of their hearts.

No, Its free. regardless of how much of what we buy goes into the service, PSN is free.
I can not own a PS3 atall, and have a PSN account, without paying a penny to Sony

yeah i cant believe the amount of people saying PSN isnt free, near the start of this thread, someone was saying it is paid for by the accessories which are insanely overpriced.

i then proved to them that the accessories aren't overpriced.

that you dont need to buy accessories in order to access psn and that you could also buy 3rd part accessories, so their argument made no sense what so ever.

yet they still kept on going.

PSN is FREE!!!!!!

it is also still down.

No one actually said that though.

But you're not actually making proper use of the service unless you buy a console and the games, which is how it's funded. You might not be paying a fee for the service directly, but insinuating that it's completely free (and therefore users have no right to complain) is simply wrong.

They are providing the service for free. They are charging for the hardware.

See above.

Nobody has said that you HAVE to buy accessories to access it, but as above, it's clearly a service funded by the sales of consoles, hardware and games. The servers and infrastructure don't just maintain themselves for zero cost.

It really isn't a difficult concept to grasp.

so basically im not paying for it, therefore its free.

for all you know sony could be charging developers / games companies for using their servers, therefore the developers are the ones paying for it.

sony is paying for it one way or another, i am not, therefore to me it is free.

sony actually makes a loss on every console sold, therefore if i bought a console and then borrowed a game from a mate, and played it on psn. who pays for my psn then? certainly not me.

Free or not people have a right to be at the very least annoyed, people bought the console in the knowledge that that you could play games online with your friends, and purchase content via the the PSN store, hissy fits won't get anyone anywhere but I can certainly understand peoples anger towards the current situation and Sony.

Surely it's directed at the wrong people though? Surely the hackers are to blame for all this?

Before people kick up the 'Yeah but Sony should have better security' argument, barely anything is truly secure in this day and age. I mean ffs Nasa and Mi5 got hacked a few years back!

BUT....... it's FREE!*

*I am in fact just kidding

I think the blame can be equally shared on this one tbh, yes barely anything is truly 100% secure but it's the companies responsibility to get as close to that as possible, Kaz Hirai at the recent press event addressing this outage said that looking back there were vulnerabilities that should have been addressed, I'm not saying the blame lays solely with Sony but, if they had had better data intrusion measures this probably wouldn't of happened.

Totally ignoring the annoying spam fest this has turned into - but has there been any official update now that the supposed date has been and gone?

I know it's SOE, but some of the questions answered i'm guessing will relate to PSN users in some way as well.

It states about overlapping code between SOE and PSN, so that could be one of the reasons it's taking longer to bring the systems back up, as well as investigations, and security updates. Also, apparently they found traces of the group Anonymous, but it could have been a cover up for another hacker.

What do you think happens to the money they make from the games and hardware? Some of it is profit, but some of it also gets reinvested back into the business, which is exactly how things like this are funded. As I've said before, PSN users might not be paying for it directly, but they are paying for it.

Whether you actually buy, borrow or steal games is inconsequential to the bigger picture, but you seem to be missing that.

I can live without PSN. I wouldn't be all that bothered if I didn't play Ultimate Team. I get plenty of enjoyment from the single player aspects of games - of which I have too many to be going at.

However the 'get in the sunshine' comments are doing my bonce in. When it's sunny, I'm in it. It's not hot or sunny at 9pm when the kids are in bed, I've done my jobs and finished marking. That's when I want to tonk / be tonked (by) someone on PSN. :p

I have played some single player while psn is down but there are millions and millions of people that play fps games and others types of games where the online part is a huge part of the game and they do that day in day out so its a big deal to these people and as said before nothing is 100% secure but for a company of sony's size they should have done better .

I agree it's become a massive part of gaming life, which I suppose highlights that Sony clearly need to do more in future to ensure downtime is at an absolute minimum.

I would probably add that with enough determination and expertise, this could happen to any company or on a larger scale.

I couldn't help but chuckle last night when watching Ace Ventura on 5* and at every break they advertised the PS3 as being at the centre of the entertainment.

:D
