is reballing a PS3 worth it ?

Noob here:

What's reballing?
What's reflow?
What is this fault with PS3's and what causes it?

reballing - resoldering the chips

watch a youtube video

basically use a heat gun to remove the pins from the cpu, and then make new pins.

you know on a pc the pins that slot into the motherboard, basically those get replaced using a template and a cpu holder and solder.

reflow is basically making all the links on the motherboard work again by heating up the motherboard or the links themselves, so they link up again.

overheating causes it.

tbh i wouldn't really worry about it, the ps3 is actually quite a decent console in terms of life span compared to the 360.

if it does ever happen, just buy a new one they are like £120 brand new now, plus with the ps4 coming out in a few weeks second hand ones will be going for pennies on ebay.

Also should be mentioned that its only a known problem with the early phats.

Mine was a launch day console, that cost $599.. Back in Nov06. I actually have 4 PS3's in my household, and this is the 1st that's ever gone wrong.

Whereas I have one 360, which had to be replaced 5times (albeit they were the original model that needed the replacing. Since going with the slim its been 100%)

Anyway, Psycho is right, i really never use the BC.. But you know, still nice to have, even if its just for nostalgia. So for $50, i thought why not and just bagged a 2nd hand slim ps2..

GTA V has been killing brand new PS3's as well, including my superslim, sending it back to zavvi and went and bought myself a preowned older slim model and it's working much better and I don't have the really loud disc reading noise anymore that the super slims have.

How odd. How is it possible a game can overheat a console to the point of death. Unless it's poorly ventilated? or a one off fluke fault...

Go check the playstation forums, hundreds of people have suddenly had issues with their playstation since playing GTA.

Well going back to my OP, and given i have a super slim arriving today, i decided to attempt my own reflow.. To at least get the disc out and to backup my kids saves on PS+ Spent the night meticulously pulling it apart, making notes of where each of the 100 screws went, given some were of different sizes, taking photo's along the way.. Spent 20secs on each cpu/gpu and memory as per the YouTubes.. All this after going out buying the torx T10 and heat gun.. Fired it all up, and the same old crap !!!! So i just thought the hell with it, and ended up taking the BD drive apart to get the disc out.. Now i have a PHAT in a thousand pieces, that will NEVER be put back together again...

RIP ye ol launch day PHAT.

Last of us Killed my launch day ps3 :(

Brought it back to life 2 times but it's furbar now. turns on and loads os but wont play game or videos

20 seconds with the heat-gun doesn't sound like very long, our BGA stuff gets about 5 mins, in a few different steps.

Yeah, when I did mine I took about 2 minutes gradually heating up the board, 5 minutes each on the cpu and gpu chips and another 2 minutes gradually removing the heat gun.

Got about a month out of it and it packed in again the other night while playing GTA. This time I just blasted my wife's hairdryer into the back vent for 10 minutes as I couldn't be bothered taking it apart.

It came back to life but I'll just be playing downloaded games until my PS4 comes so that I don't end up with a disc stuck in the drive when it finally dies.
