Is restoring an image of your computer the same as a clean Windows install, if so recommend me image capturing software!

I have Windows XP. I'm more than happy with it as an OS as all I do is surf the internet, e-mails, word process and calculations on spreadsheets.
I'm more than happy to upgrade to Win7 when money and the power of my machine permits!

Are there any free alternative image capturing softwares?

Providing the image was taken when the OS was still shiny! i.e. just after you have installed it and got all your drivers/apps installed.
