Is Symbian really that bad?

The last Nokia I owned was the n70, and whilst it had loads of features, it was a horrible phone to use imo.

I switched to the W810i and loved every aspect of that, the simplicity of the SE software was a breath of fresh air (imo)

See, I have to say I do love SE phones and I've always found them very reliable!
 
Great things about the SE phones...

Awesome battery life
Simplicity


I now have a HTC Hero, it is awesome

but the battery life is ~3 days max (non standard mini usb cable is a bit annoying, will buy 2 or 3 more for convenience)
writing emails are easier on the hero, but for sending a quick text, I'd say the SE is better.. you don't need to concentrate so much with an SE to send a text

The Hero is like a mini laptop though, very pleased with it :)


The n70 is the only Symbian phone I've used mind, so don't let my opinion sway you away

I'm reasonably confident that you can charge (i.e. not data/audio) the Hero using any miniUSB cable.
 
you can use any miniUSB cable on it, i use whichever is nearest for charging / data on mine.

Have to say it's awesome, coming from winmo 6.1 though:p

I went with a nokia E72, loving the non-touchscreenness!

Anyone who says this has clearly never used Android or the iPhone, and I would wager it's your first touch phone... reason being I was exactly the same when I bought one.

However the reality is that S60 is a complete dog of an OS marred by HORRIBLE usability, an unintuitive layout, and feels like it should have been left behind 5 years ago. Added to which the resistive screen makes the 5800 the most frustrsting phone experience I ever used on a touchscreen, and I used it heavily for over a year. Do not buy, get an N82, N86 or an E72 instead, because S60 is MUCH better without touch.

Android and iPhone OS are so much better it's not even funny, but only buying one and using one for a couple of weeks will make you realise that.

They are now amongst the most unreliable... thir quality control and software updates are goddamn awful. I am the mobility guy for my firm and by far the most common phoness ent back are SE's. I actively dissuade people from buying them now.

yep it is my first touch phone :D . but it never ever crashed and i used it heavily too for a year as well...but i just cancelled my order of a BB 9700 and got a Magic , so we will see how worse it is
 
S60 is a great mobile OS, but it is just that - a mobile OS and an old one at that. I've found it fine on all the nokia's I have had preiousy and the 5800 is indeed a great evlolution of the OS. There is oly one reason I don't have one; the N900 and Maemo is better.

The N70 mentioned earlier was not particularly good imho, the N73 was signficantly better (am looking for a cheap one as a work phone in fact!) and everyone knows how good the N95 is. Things move at such a rate now with mobile tech and symbian has been around forever in those terms. S60 came alone on the N-gage generation, 6.5 years ago, it's had a hell of a shelf-life. It should see another yer or two until Maemo or whatever takes over. In the meantime, it's still very capable.
