I'm mainly thinking about this from the probable longevity of the 4090 here I certainly don't want to be upgrading mine for a good while, though when I upgrade to 8k, I might grab a pcie5 5000 series too, it all depends on how well the 4090 does at that res, from what I've seen, the 4090 handles 8K well, though that was a linus tech tips liquid cooled 4090 stream, allowing it to boost to max clocks constantly, but honestly, my temps are not that bad with all the pc fans on 100%

In terms of ability and the possibility of longetivity I would say yes but in relation to price/ability+longetivity then the 1080 ti has it beat hands down. Had the 4090 been 600/700 it would be GOAT of gpu. But at 1800 great card, terrible pricing.

I always though the greatest card ever for me were the 1080ti, ATI 5870, 8800gtx they were the cards I used the longest.

No. The only thing Nv offer of worth now is software driven features, which they are increasingly locking behind generational releases. The 4090 struggles with some games at native at 4k, the design method is to make use of that aforementioned software.

You're going to struggle with some titles at 4k 2-3 years on let alone 7, playing newer stuff at 8k is a pipe dream already.

It used to be viable to buy the best card available for long term, rather than incremental upgrades. Since you like LTT, they actually advise buying lower than top end and upgrading more frequently if you're worried about long term cost effective performance.

If the 4090 is the new 1080 Ti, then that means price/performance of future GPUs is going to be bad, because that's a big part of what made the 1080 Ti so good.

Possibly yes
Longevity usually also means being satisfied
Without every setting cracked to ultra
Since you're already talking about 8k
I doubt you would be happy with having to lower
Some settings in a few years time Possibly

The 4090 is expensive
Draws a load of power
Not to mention I don't think any 1080ti
Had a problem with melting connectors

but the OP is saying is the 4090 the new 1080 Ti and that is what i am responding to in my comments, i never payed any attention to the Titan range.
were they not lack luster upgrades

I have upgraded from a 1080ti to a 4090 recently for my 4k @120hz monitor.
I got the 4090 for £1600 and dont expect to upgrade it for 5 years, longer if i can stretch it.
The way i look at it is i doubt garphics technology is going to move so fast that the 4090 wont be able to maintain 4k@120hz on medium settings in 5 years.
Granted there will always be a hand full of games that prefer AMD or just dont perform that well but for the most part it will run fine.

Regarding 8k, my best guess is it will be like 4k on the 1080ti, it will do it but you will have to reduce the settings to get smooth gameplay at 60hz
However i cant imagine playing games at 8k, I find 4k at 48" is perfect for me.
 
The 5090 and RDNA4 will be out shortly. Seems a bad time to spend this kind of money on a card.

8k is doable on a 7900XTX. A good friend of mine has been playing at 8k ultrawide since the 7800X3D launch.
 
Considering all that annoying whine the 4090s had I couldn’t say they were a good product. Didn’t keep them for that reason.

I hope the 50 series cards sort that out and the power delivery stuff - absolute nonsense.

not looking to buy, already got one, when I refreshed my PC
I was just wondering if in many years to come we will still see, still rocking my 4090 threads, with people cajoling them to get the 8090 or whatever it will be in yonks years, probably be on 8k 120hz or more by then though, eh., luckily , I futureproofed with pcie 5 capability

I don’t think resolution can scale past 8k unless people want 10’ monitors. 4K at sub 40” is already questionable.
