Hi guys and girls,

Need a new router as mine is at the end of its life. Speeds are so slow and due to the amount of devices, it's just not performing well enough.

Also, I need some new features.

So is the Asus N56U still the best router to buy or is there something better?

I need to be able to connect to...

- Sony Bravia TV
- 2 Laptops
- iPod Touch
- iPhone
- Samsung S3
- BB Bold
- HTC Wildfire
- PS3
- PSP (Not vital)

and whatever else I may purchase.

I also need the function to share a hard drive over a network which I believe the N56U does?

And I need guest networking facilities if possible else they can live without net!

Thanks for all replies in advance.

Ash

EDIT: I should add that it will be connected to a Virgin Media Cable Modem and a External Hard drive (2TB)

I believe the N56 should suit your needs. I also use it with a virgin cable modem and share my external usb drive on the network without any issues. I have 3 active wired connections and a couple of wireless ones and have never had any issues. I am not sure what you mean by guest networking though but it would be possible to allow them to connnect and just changed your password when they leave :)

The N56 and N66 are both good buys, the N56 is a bit more price/performance but the N66 has faster wireless and guest wireless support amongst other extras. Read the reviews for both and make your decision - I have a N56 btw, I couldn't justify the price difference and the N56 has slightly faster WAN throughput too, although that won't come into play until 700Mb/800Mb internet connections are common.

The 66U is just too expensive. Do you regret buying your 56U/any problems you have with it?

I have read reviews but I'm sorting basing the buy on what Overclockers usually recommends everyone.

You'll find more N56 users on here than N66 users on here, I have no major issues with mine, just remember to set the 'Internet' option in the QOS section and preferably change the 5G wireless to a different SSID ie put '5G' at the end or something. Nas performance is around 15MB/s read and 11MB/s write which is more than acceptable for an added extra :)

If youre talking about QOS settings page being absent in place of the VPN server page, then I guess no they havnt. If QOS is that important then I suggest staying with the original firmware. For most, it is not necessary and the added updates and fixes the custom firmware bring far outweigh what is lost. :)

Can you guys confirm that your connecting a N56U to a Virgin Media "Super Hub" set in modem mode?

Sorry....bit of a Noob here and I'm not sure of the setup or benefits... but very interested :)

I've just got a normal modem, no super hub malarkey.

But you can do what you suggested above.

On a side note, can DPD hurry the **** up!

Anyone know why I get file transfer speeds between laptops on wireless at 50 KB/s :| ?

Edit1: I should add, I got 2MB/s on my old router which is what I should be getting with this?

Edit2: I tried not using the home share route, just went straight to the shared file on the lappy and the speed has improved but only to 80KB/s?
