Is the canon 24-105 still a worthy purchase?

Jessops currently doing 24months interest free on several canon lenses, they have the 24-105 L lense for ~£700. it's with official canon box, I know you can get a white box for £400-£500 but the ones with a canon box seem to be ~£700.

I really like mine (came with 5d3 kit) but I always feel its the sort of lens you're better picking up second hand as there's bound to be loads sold on from kits, not sure I'd drop £700 on one. I think Sigma offer a similar lens which is supposed to be sharper than the Canon.

As per above comment, I got mine with my 5d3 kit, i think its a very solid lens indeed, great iq, very useful zoom range indeed. I may not be the newest lens but I really wouldn't let that worry you at all.

Thanks for the replies, only reason I was looking was due to the 24month intrest free with zero deposit. They have the 24-70 2.8 think it's mkii for £1600 but even with 24months intrest free it's a bit out of my price range and usage level(I'm not a pro).

I've got one myself. Came as the kit on my 6D. I've been considering upgrading it for a bit of added sharpness, but that aside, it practically lives on my camera. Absolutely fantastic as a do-it all walk about. Use it almost on it's own on holidays, and it's the only lens I'm about to take on a weekend trip to Zurich. It's all I'll need. The alternative for me would be a 24-70, but then I'd be looking at maybe getting and taking a 70-200 with me to cover the range properly.

Why not get an interest free credit card then buy a grey copy?

I've tried to avoid credit cards over the years, only had a credit card when I opened a student account first year of uni but canceled it after awhile and not had a credit card since.

It's a minefield, which do you get? Then you ditch it after the interest free period has ended, get a new one if you want/need something else and so the cycle continues.

It's not a minefield! You simply go to money super market find the one with the longest interest free rate and apply for it, buy your lens, pay it off over the interest free period and then cancel the card.

If your prepared to sign up to and interest free purchase option then taking a out a credit card for the same thing shouldn't be seen as an issue I've done it several times.

Just saw on camera price busters that the 'Indian takeaway' people are doing it for £659 currently, the rainforest had it for £599 a few days back but now £663. Jessops still have it for £749.

Still more than grey import, but for an UK canon retail box copy is that a good price?

You're almost certainly going to get better value by saving pennies for a while and picking one up second hand. That way you've no financing over your head and if you want to sell it again you wont suffer much of a loss, if at all.

I bought one second hand as my first L lens.

I've got plenty of optically better lenses, but I've never planned to sell the 24-105. I think reasons being are:

- Its lighter than the 2.8s, which makes it easier to carry around all day.
- It has extra reach that the 24-70 doesn't have, making it again pretty good for general purpose walking around.
- The IS is useful if you want to shoot any video.
- I once dropped it and it was totally unfazed by it.
