Is the i7-5960X worth it at £600?

Hi there,

A friend of mine is selling off his i7-5960X for a little under £600 - Would it be worth spending the extra £300-ish over the i7-5820k for the 2 cores/4 threads/12 PCI-E lanes?

I mainly game, and plan to make some sort of videos every so often so the cores/threads are not too important to me, however having that much processing power seems like it'd be very nice for the future.

I plan to have SLI 980Tis sometime later in the year when the prices have settled a little.

Thanks,

If gaming is the main thing u use the pc for no. Hardly any gain with the extra cores. If ur going to render a lot then yes.

I have the 5950X, its overclocked to 4.2 Ghz. I don't see any difference in gaming although multi taking and converting media from one format to another its a beast.

if you need 8 cores you probably need 16 cores. so get a dual-cpu workstation mb.

My guess is you don't need it.

Some applications, like photo-video filters use multi-threaded algos, so they will use all the power you throw at them.

One more thing to consider: 980 uses 16 lane PCIe bus, so SLI config on 5820 will have one card in x16 and another in x8 PCIe mode. 5960x will have both cards in x16.

5960x clocks to 4.4 relatively easily.

yes go for it if you can afford and want the best ( not just for gaming ) . i myself thinking to get 5820k but i know i will get itchy to upgrade to 5960X down the line which might as well get 5860X at the first place.

Thanks for the advice guys; unfortunately he sold it for £580 without asking me first. :(

You should thank him for saving you some money. You would have been paying a lot of money for nearly no perceptible gain for the things that you do.
